Re: How best to lay this out
Standing waves and phase problems in a small room cause certain frequencies to get cancelled out of the audio spectrum, so a graph of the room spectrum will have notches out of it like a comb.

The music room in my Bristol place is terrible actually - even though it has pretty good monitors! I was listening to some stuff is there and I was getting this awful deep resonance and I just couldn't dial it it... Ben (who's room it is) said "is it on B? If so undo what you've done and ignore it" He's a 5 string bassist so quite familiar with what B does in his room.

Put your cab in that upstairs room. And maybe some other pedals and junk you don't use frequently and other non-recording stuff from downstairs to free up a little area where you can space your monitors better. Drill a hole and run a speaker cable and mic cable up to the room. Use it for an iso-room for your cab. You can leave your amp downstairs and tweak the knobs.

You should go to the north of england where Bubba and Jonny Deep live. They have to have the beds vertically on their ends and then they get strapped to them with bungee cords.Armistice wrote: ↑Wed Apr 25, 2018 8:51 amReally? Wow. Does it have one of those 5 foot 6 doors and a 7 foot ceiling as well - long time "Escape to the Country" viewer here...![]()
I've been spending a lot of time looking at real estate floorplans lately - your room is 5.7 sq m - I spot anything under 9 on a plan here as the smallest bedroom and I know the place will be too pokey for me. And I'm not talking suburban houses here - inner city high density townhouses and the like. But I believe you, I have seen a few on my trips north.
Out of interest I just measured my bathroom ensuite - 5.2 sq m - and that's in an apartment.Room to burn!

Beds? I spent my first twenty years sleeping on a newspaper, and I had to share it with six other siblings, lying top-to-toe.

LOOXYEWRY.
We slept on line int middle of road, we did.
Yes,I'm a long time ETTC viewer as well. I watch just to marvel when city folk are in the 2nd reception room of a thatched mud hut that's too small to swing a knitting needle and they melt into each other with "oh, so cozy". I then think out loud, "Cozy? Tea Cozy perhaps."
We Australians expect SPACE and we SHUT OUT the light.

I just measured and my current studio room (and computer gaming room and home office) is 10' x 9'8" x 7'8". Let's see, in meters that's 3 x 2.9 x 2.2. So that's 8.7 square meters, if my math is even near correct. And I'm pretty darned cozy in that room.
Here's a shot of my room from the entryway (sorry so dark, the bright window and dark room make correct exposure impossible for a photo amateur like me):
And the same room from about the same perspective when I have my acoustic screens deployed. Camera was over my head, and now I realize how desperately I need to clean that fabric on the top!

I like your wood floors! Great color, looks really classy.Armistice wrote: ↑Wed Apr 25, 2018 6:57 pm Aargh - posted in the wrong thread!
For all my joking about your tiny room...
Studio Armistice. Media desk in the hall. 2.3m wide and 1.7m deep.
You have to out your head in different places or the node thing will work against you. Why I'm always having trouble with snare, bass and mid guitars.
So you can work around small spaces!
And your RME looks right at home
And no wonder you're having trouble with kick, your subwoofer is actually a cardboard box!

Re: How best to lay this out
There's definitely a bass node point in my mixing/recording room, quite close to my monitor seating position - just moving my head back a foot results in an increase in bass. I have bass traps and reflection treatment in there, but my untreated living room was actually better. It's more accentuated since I upgraded from the Yamaha HS5s to the HS8s, presumably because the bass was fairly inaudible from the former by comparison. I need the living room as my recording room.

I suppose all I can do is get the room set up as well as I can - get the carpet on the floor, stick some of them wibbly foam squares on the wall. Then work from there sticking music on that I know well and I know is a good mix and place my head at different positions in the room!Bubba wrote: ↑Thu Apr 26, 2018 5:44 am There's definitely a bass node point in my mixing/recording room, quite close to my monitor seating position - just moving my head back a foot results in an increase in bass. My monitors will be much better placed in relation to my head than they are now - they're less than a metre apart at the moment and positioned craply in respect to the adjacent walls - you've seen my layout haven't you?
I'll google-hangout you, Tad or Greg when I'm getting set up in there for a bit of advice.

I must have missed the memo outlining the injection of new members into the inner circle.
