How best to lay this out
How best to lay this out
OK, so after some wrangling - I now have the upstairs office. I work from home a lot and its also going to be my recording space to get my amp out of the front room.
I'm going to be getting the room carpeted and I'll also be able to install those wibbley foam squares on the walls and traps in the corners where practical.
Here is a diagram of the room: Also, my cab is (mm) H:520, L:740, D:300
My desk is actually 73cm tall - so if I stick my cab on its end as I plan to, it will be roughly the same height and width as the desk so it will effectively be a desk extension. Depending on far I move the desk along the wall though this may leave the cab facing quite closely into a corner... which I'm assuming is a bad thing!
While the desk will fit under the window - its not going to be going there. I need to be able to open the window which I won't be able to do if its obscured by screens and monitors.
How do you guys think I should lay this out? Where do you think I should stick wibbley foam squares etc?

Your desk should be under the window with monitors firing down the length of the room.

Yeah - that was my first thought too... not an option apparently.jonny deep wrote: ↑Tue Apr 24, 2018 9:29 am Your desk should be under the window with monitors firing down the length of the room.
In an ideal world I figured that I would stick desk under the windows, stick my cab behind the door with a vocal area next to it.
Stick a trap along the ceiling/wall line of the wall where the door is and stick square things on the walls and the back of the door.
That would leave me with space either end of my desk to build plinths to stick my monitors on.

0.59 = 1'11"
0.85 = 2'9"

That's the only way to use that tiny room. That's basically a closet.

Yeah - I just don't think I'm gonna get away with doing that.

A closet to a suburban American is a double room over here.
Re: How best to lay this out
I was thinking the same thing. That's pretty standard 3rd bedroom size in a 3 bedroom house in the UK.jonny deep wrote: ↑Tue Apr 24, 2018 10:42 am A closet to a suburban American is a double room over here.

Yeah I know. My master bedroom closet is pretty much twice the size of JD's office...or whatever that is.jonny deep wrote: ↑Tue Apr 24, 2018 10:42 am A closet to a suburban American is a double room over here.
The reality is, unfortunately, there's not much you can do with a room that size from a recording standpoint. It's not good for mixing, it's not good for tracking. It might be a good "vocal booth"? It's good for getting your gear out of the living room.
If you have to use it, do what jonny said - use the long dimension.

Will a fridge even fit in there?jonny deep wrote: ↑Tue Apr 24, 2018 10:55 am
Won't it be where they keep the new fridge in 6 months?

Maybe... just maybe. You'd have to take all the magnets off the door.Greg_L wrote: ↑Tue Apr 24, 2018 10:56 amWill a fridge even fit in there?jonny deep wrote: ↑Tue Apr 24, 2018 10:55 am

Can't be any worse than the room I record in now which is just a living room with a wood block floor and the monitors in really weird places.

You should turn the fridge into a vocal booth.

Aside from dying of carbon dioxide poisoning this is a great idea.

Re: How best to lay this out
My first thoughts on a room that size JD is spending time and or money on some decent diffusion for your 2nd and 3rd reflection points dude. It's a small trick to get a smaller room feeling a bit more lively. But don't go too crazy with it cause then you get some wild reflections that will go wild on you. I'll try to send your issue out to the twitterverse and see what comes back !!!
Re: How best to lay this out
Comb filtering will probably be a major hassle in a room like that.
