Or did they demolish a gabled roof to add this on top?
That's great to have a new office and studio space. Is the climate in Wales such that you need air conditioning up there? Here in the midwest US, even 2-story houses get boiling hot upstairs in the summertime. It'd be even worse with a 3rd story, when all of the heat rises and settles in that top story.

Now that we've got that out of the way looks like your Reno is taking off man. I love watching shit unfold and progress that is so badass.
Re: New Room Layout
Is that standard construction practice? I've never seen that before. Here in the US something like that would add like 9 years to the timeline.

Yeah, if you're taking the roof off an occupied property, ir gets a temporary roof. I don't think there's a regulation that says it has to happen, but it's good practice

Re: New Room Layout
Does that change with the timeline of the project?
I see a lot folks getting roofs redone around here, but since they're 1-2 day jobs, they don't get any temporary shelter put up
Re: New Room Layout
It took them two or three days to put the scaffolding up.vomitHatSteve wrote: ↑Thu May 15, 2025 7:18 pmDoes that change with the timeline of the project?

They're not just re-felting and tiling the roof though, they're completely rebuilding the roof to be a different shape and adding a block wall up there.
Re: New Room Layout
@Tadpui Has inspired me with his fancy room treatment. I want to start planning how I'm going to treat my awkwardly shaped room.
Refer back to the sketches at the start of the first page for the layout.
My desk will be at the end of the room by the chimney - this wall will likely just be plastered flat and I'll have a fitted desk in front of it. I'm gonna stick a square of room treatment on this wall in front of me.. using @WhiskeyJack's approach of vandalising an old band t-shirt to build into a the room treatment.
I'm guessing I'll need something on the flat wall which will be to my right, no idea what I'm going to do with the sloping wall to my left. I'll stick traps in the back corners.

I've got an In Utereo tour T-shirt (he didn't get as far as the UK, he tried to top himself in Rome and then went home) that I don't wear anymore - I'd like to have this in front of my desk as its a plain white T-shirt with the In Utero angel and a load of tour dates on it. I've got a really cool DK shirt too that would look good. Where are the pics of yours so I can have a think about it.WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Fri May 16, 2025 12:31 pmNice buddy. They are pretty cool. Re: New Room Layout
Started putting the partitions in now so I can get an idea of how the room will feel.
Its actually going to end up being 2.3m wide and 4.6m long. So, I've actually got more space than I anticipated which is good.
My desk will be at the far end of the room against what is currently the chimney, although that wall is going to end up flat and there'll be insulation in there so that I don't piss off the neighbours.
Guitars are going to be on a rack to the left of the desk, what's going to be really nice is building the desk into the space and actually sticking a a rack space for my interface in it and an amp shelf.

Re: New Room Layout
HAve you considered putting in a decoupled false wall with 6+" of air gap between you and your neighbors? ?JD01 wrote: ↑Fri May 23, 2025 11:39 am Started putting the partitions in now so I can get an idea of how the room will feel.

I remember back eons ago in the infancy of my interest in all thing home audio and noise and stuff me and buddy from another band were talking about it and he found some sound science were the only true way to isolate sound transfer was to have a room built inside of room, decoupled and with a minimum of a 6 inch air gap between existing walls ceilings and floors. HE and his dad did exactly that (my brain has lost how they decoupled the room) and i am serious when i say you could stand outside that barn, and they could jamming inside at large club volumes and you wouldn't hear anything outside. Not even so much as a low end rumble.
But as soon as you opened those first two doors it was like hell escaping.
I am thinking if you can spare 6 inches (like a real 6 inches, not the 6 inches you have your wife gaslight into believing is 6 inches) it might be worth a shot while the skeleton of your new room is still exposed.
Other wise everything is looking awesome man!!! I can only imagine how excited you are for all this.
Which one of the loin fruits is moving into your old music room ?

I can't spare 6 inches all around!
Re: New Room Layout
I've had everything from new roofing to foundation repair. Never once a White crew. Not that I care. No Blacks either. I'm just saying here in the US that type of work is done by immigrants...legal or not. We need them.

Re: New Room Layout
Our house build was very unusual in that respect. The vast majority of the labor was white guys. Foundation and drywall were the only Mexican crews in the whole process. That's really surprising to me.
Looking at the demographics of our county, I guess it isn't totally surprising. It's something like 92% Caucasian as of the latest census. Like, if our county was a person, it would listen to Dave Matthews Band. It's really white. Almost suspiciously white.

Yeah here in Texas it would be a shock to the system to find a white or black murrcan doing construction of any type. They may run a crew, but they're not out there swinging hammers. The actual work is all done by some types of latino hispanic.
