Re: Lt. Bob's archives #2
In general, they're lovely people. I have some good friends who are excellent musicians and also happen to be ukeladies.
It is weird that ukes are so gendered as feminine and dismissable since Bruddah Iz and Paul McCartney are both so widely respected.

I don't think they're intentionally "gendered". They became that way when every teenage white girl made youtube videos of herself playing a uke. I blame Zooey Deschanel.vomitHatSteve wrote: ↑Mon Mar 01, 2021 11:38 am In general, they're lovely people. I have some good friends who are excellent musicians and also happen to be ukeladies.

I've never once thought of them that way.
And actually if I had to think about what I thought about them, I picture a guy playing one.
I just think of them as extremely limited instruments that can either be used as an additional 'color' or as beginner instruments for learning the basics.
And I've yet to hear anyone doing anything very interesting on one.
I feel it's likely that having said that someone will put a link to somebody doing just that.
But as yet, I haven't heard anything that made me go, "Oh that's cool!"

Well, for a while I was thinking of getting a ukulele but after reading this thread. . . don't want to be a ukulady but it's a great term!

If I knew what I was doing, I'd be dangerous!

Sorry to put you off them!
They're very fun instruments. if you're the sort of person who feels the need to compulsively plunk away on an instrument at all times, ukes are great for it since they're quiet and unobtrusive and won't generally get on anyone's nerves. (As long as you don't insist they listen to your Garfunkle and Oates covers)
Re: Lt. Bob's archives #2
I actually started playing baritone uke when I was in elementary school, by high school I ditched it for a full grown guitarvomitHatSteve wrote: ↑Mon Mar 01, 2021 6:47 pmSorry to put you off them!

ya' know I'm not hating on ukes .... no uke hate here.
I just hate the over the top descriptions today of freakin' everything.
The news is always "John has hilarious response" when there's no way in the world that hilarious describes it.
Or 'Running back has brutal response to critics' and in reality they said something like, "I don't agree" .... nothing brutal whatever.
Guitar magazines call someone's guitar playing 'incendiary' when it's simply competent playing that serves as a vehicle for their voice and well written tunes.
Not saying they're not good tunes .... they are. Not saying they don't have a great voice ..... they do ..... why's the need to call simple playing incendiary .... because that's not good enough so lets exaggerate?
And ukes DO have a use and a place ..... actually listening to that nice 'over the rainbow' rendition above makes me say I could see a place for that in some of my stuff.
So I'm not anti-uke ........ I'm against Trump-level exaggeration of what they can do.
Also I'm not talking about anyone here ....... I haven't see that unreality here ....... I'm just talking about the world at large.

I really wasn't meaning to sound like I was put off. . .honest! My sense of humor can be misconstrued sometimes! Here is the song I thought of when ukulady was said. . .
Arlo Guthrie is one of my heroes.

actually I was responding to earlier posters ..... and really, no one seemed 'put off' ....... I just wanted to be clear i wasn't hating on them just because I feel they're a little bit limited

Re: Lt. Bob's archives #2
Honestly, I picked up "ukelady" from a friend who had intentionally befriended a variety of them. They had - like - 6 different side projects going with cello and various styles of uke-driven songwriter.
It kind of sounds like a belittling term, but I have great respect for the ukeladies. I'm honestly kind of surprised by the sheer variety that ukuladies I know have produced.
