Ready for vocals?
This is my first time making a beat. Dunno what I’m gonna do with it to be honest. I can’t rap.

Re: Ready for vocals?
Interesting - initially but the lack of variation in the beat and bass left it a very long listen.
The addition of a rap vocal with some variation in metre and such would make a significant difference though.
I'm not really one to comment though as I've not been able to get my head around the genre since Rapper's Delight.

Thanks, that’s what I’m thinking. I added in some guitar at the end, but I think the vocals will make the difference between just being boring and something to listen to all the way through.rayc wrote: ↑Sun Aug 16, 2020 6:02 am Interesting - initially but the lack of variation in the beat and bass left it a very long listen.

Hmmm, that kick is very dry and loud... but then that's a rap thing I suppose. I just don't really know rap enough to comment really.

Re: Ready for vocals?
I figured most people here don’t. I guess I’ll ask around for rappers to lay down their vocals on this track and see where that goes.

You might have some luck finding a rapper on Kompoz

Generally. I think it's less common in "lo-fi beats" tho. Usually, you want more of a "chill" vibe for that genre.
I'd probably dial the kick back a little. Did you HPF it too? I might turn it down and give it a lot more low end if it were my mix.

Can do. I didn’t use a filter except for on the piano. I might just use one of my low end plugs and see how it feels.vomitHatSteve wrote: ↑Sun Aug 16, 2020 6:52 pmGenerally. I think it's less common in "lo-fi beats" tho. Usually, you want more of a "chill" vibe for that genre.

Re: Ready for vocals?
I think it has LOTS of potential. . . rap is definitely not my thing but I totally love the tinkering piano! The whole thing has a rather "catchy" feel to it (maybe hypnotizing?) I agree with JD01 that the kick it rather dominate but, that may be a rap thing too. Like I said, love the piano tinkerings!
If I knew what I was doing, I'd be dangerous!

Thanks! I think the piano is what makes it, to be honest. It’s from a Mozart piece in D minor.Alison wrote: ↑Sun Aug 16, 2020 8:46 pm I think it has LOTS of potential. . . rap is definitely not my thing but I totally love the tinkering piano! It's not bad. Are the crackles there on purpose? They might add a nice color, tough to say without hearing the full thing.
I think the kick is pretty loud. It's a little woofy too. Rap typically has a real tight kick. You might want to EQ out some stuff in the 600hz range.
And then roll off the very low end of the bass - like below 50hz or so.

Man there is no reason you can't just layer some spoken word shit with loose fitting rhymes into that and still have it be awesome dude. It does not need to be rap or like hip hop. Break the rules and do what makes you happy.
See a song Called "Vessel" by the Artist 'Glue'. You could have the same vibe as that.
Keep going Aaron.

I’ve been trying to add some words and haven’t been successful. I’ll check it out, maybe I can sample a speech from someone.WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Tue Aug 18, 2020 9:21 pm Man there is no reason you can't just layer some spoken word shit with loose fitting rhymes into that and still have it be awesome dude. Yep! The crackles are there on purpose. I used a vinyl plugin on the piano. Thanks!TripleM wrote: ↑Tue Aug 18, 2020 9:06 pm It's not bad. Are the crackles there on purpose? They might add a nice color, tough to say without hearing the full thing.

Maybe check out Librivox? You can layer in a free recording of someone reading a passage from an public domain book.CrowsofFritz wrote: ↑Wed Aug 19, 2020 10:58 amI’ve been trying to add some words and haven’t been successful. I've used it a time or two I think to good effect.

Re: Ready for vocals?
I put Ben Crystal’s Hamlet Monologue over it. I really wish the audio quality was better, because it’s a perfect fit timing wise.

Re: Ready for vocals?
Try an FFT filter for noise reduction on the monolog? If you can get the noise floor down, you have a lot more options for getting it sit in the mix. (and can flat out mute the crowd noise during the pauses)
