HA! That's funny. I was just about to post that I finished the bass and guitars. Learning the piano part will take the longest. After that, drums and vocals shouldn't be too hard. I hope. :panic:

Just throwing this in here at Bubba's suggestion. I guess this is where I should have posted it in the first place, but we're already on page 4.

In case anyone's wondering...or cares....this is how I learned the piano part. I'm doing less than what we hear here, though. I'm not that good. I'm basically only playing what the right hand is doing. No way I can play this whole part the way it is.[BBvideo=560,315]https://youtu.be/sTh_nt8Ox_w[/BBvideo]

Ha ha, I was perfectly happy for you to have your own thread for it, but it's nice to archive it in this thread as well.

LOL. Don't let me down, now! I need to learn the bass part for mine and JD's cover, actually. :suspicious:

I think Paul Simonon is my bass playing inspiration more than anyone else. Seriously. I suck at lots of things, but I can rip on bass, and a major part of that was sitting and learning Clash bass lines as a teenager. He might be reggae influenced himself, but he plays bass like an american and it gelled with me.

I'll send you the bassline from my scratch take now. Its comped together its its a relatively interesting bassline and my bass is almost unplayable above the 5th fret. Fretting some of them notes on the 7th or 9th fret is a cruel exercise in endurance.

EDIT: I'm starting to get cramp in my hand just thinking about playing that fucking instrument.

That could be useful, cheers.

Regarding your bass, it sounds like the truss rod is much too slack. Look down the neck from the nut end. The neck should be almost flat, with just a slight dip to accomodate the string vibration. Slacken the strings and give the Truss rod a half turn clockwise. Bring the strings back up to pitch and see if there's been an improvement. If it's not quite there, give it another half, unless everything starts to feel tight. A truss rod should move smoothly but firmly. If you attempt this, first give the allen key an eighth turn anti-clockwise just to check that the truss rod actually functions. Leave it for a day to settle, then look at it again. If it's unplayable now, you're unlikely to make it worse. If the neck is already flat and there's no adjustment left on the bridge saddles, and it's a bolt-on neck, you need a shim. Loosen the strings, take off the neck and make a shim out of a piece of old credit card about 50mm x 12mm. Pop it in the neck pocket at the body end, then put everything back together. This ought to get you somewhere near.

I liked Simenon's playing too. My main influence was JJ Burnel of the Stranglers, though. Very aggressive gritty sound.

The neck is like a fucking banana but there's no adjustment left in the truss rod. Loosening it isn't a problem but its getting very, very difficult to tighten it - if I go much further with it, it'll just break I reckon.

I've been trying to get this bass straightened out for years. It all went tits up in my old flat where my music room was really damp (mouldy walls) so I chucked a dehumidifier in there. The bass was fucked after that - my Washburn and Ibanez were both fine - I think it was when this happened although it could have just gone wrong on its own 'cos its rubbish.

I've just done the most basic version - there's a few other flourishes in there which I just didn't have the patience to either learn or remember where they fit!

Okay here's my submission to the Clash tribute thread. Rami did super-late era Clash, I'm going back to the very beginning*.

White Riot

*Disclaimer - I feel like I might have to explain this song like I did the other one. This is not a racist song promoting racism or white power. What he's saying is that black people have reason to riot and they don't mind doing so. More power to them. White people, on the other hand, are safe and boring and are scared to riot. He's lamenting the fact that as a white guy he has nothing to riot about.

Greg,
VERY cool cover of classic Clash. Yeah, this song was, willfully, misinterpreted by some folk at the time - particularly those who were against punk. It's a call to arms, a call against complacency and "...going backwards..."
Top version, hard and fast enough to hammer nails.
Cheers

Fantastic. Great separation, clarity, everything sounds great, everything is audible and clear. Fucking awesome.

Now I feel stupid for putting mine in its' own thread. I wasn't sure who would see it all the way on page 4 over here. I actually think you should put this in its own thread, too. It would be nice for un-known newcomers to hear something this awesome. Might give us some credibility. :D

Shit, so it's not the Ku Klux Klash? I'm almost diappointed.✊🏻✊🏿

Thanks a lot Ray and Rami. I really enjoyed doing it.

I dunno, I think it's fine in here where it belongs. Hell I might do another one. Maybe something a bit more ambitious.

Greg, that's excellent. Really good version - its a keeper.

The bassline is so instantly recognisable as a Greg recording.

How do you get that tone with the kick drum - its really punchy - but doesn't dominate. My kick is always too quiet but if I put if up too much louder it becomes really boomy. Is it just the way that the drum is or do you do something cool with it?
