"The Clash" - a tribute thread

Post by Bubba »

Some of you may know that I've spent a fair bit of my recording time doing quite slavish Clash covers. :minernuggs: I have nothing new to contribute to this forum at the moment, but as myself and JDOD have a Clash cover version in the pipeline, I thought I might post a home for all the Clash stuff I've been associated with.

This is the last Clash tune I had a go at and it's a collaboration between myself and Greg L. Greg did the drums and bass guitar, I did the electric guitars and vocals. This is my mix, I don't know whether Greg would like to have a go at the stems eventually. :)

If anybody else wants to post their old or new Clash tunes in this thread, they'd be most welcome. :)

Here's my other stuff, just for completeness.

Awesome theme for a thread! I remember "Last Gang" though I don't think I ever heard the finished version. Your guitars and vocals sound very appropriate. My parts...meh.

Here's my americanized version of "Safe European Home".

Thanks! I'm sorry you feel that way about your parts, I think they're great, particularly the bass. I know you know how to get the best out of your own drum tracks and it makes me feel I've let you down in that respect, but I honestly think the :drums: mostly sound really good. I think I could have done better on the snare - I think I've made it sound a bit hollow. I might revisit that.

I've listened to your S.E.H. before and I'm just as impressed now as I was the first time. :D

No, no, I'm not saying you messed up my tracks or anything. I'm not let down. I hear things in my drum tuning and mic placement that I'd do differently in hindsight. Nothing you can do about that. I think I played it all well enough. I do love the bass. I love the song and love the bass part. drums

Shit, looks like I might have to cover a Clash song. :D

Should I do "Rock the Casbah" or "Should I stay"?

Hmmmm.....I'm leaning towards Casbah.

I'm hearing you do "Stay Free" or "Train in Vain".

You've possibly heard Train in Vain before and just don't know it by name. It's a pretty popular Clash song. Not "Casbah" popular, but one of their more known songs.

Stay Free is only known to Clash fans.

They're both Mick Jones sung Clash songs and your voice is similar to his.

Oh yeah! I know "Train in Vain". That's pretty close to Casbah in popularity, around here anyway. I just never knew the title. Love that song. I think that might be the one.

Ha awesome!

When I was about 15 I was in this high school cover band and we played that song. I sang it. Needless to say we were pretty terrible.

Weren't we all. And we thought we were going to "MAKE IT!" :D

"Train in Vain" has doubled vocals panned wide. There's nothing in the middle. Pretty cool.

Actually, listen to the first line. "Say you'll" is only sung by the guy on the left, and then the second guy only comes in for the word "Stand......by your man".

If you're taking requests I think Atom Tan would be a good rami cover.

Just listened to a bit of it. It's a cool tune, but too much tension. I'd want to double up that rythm, it would drive me nuts to keep the song at that "half speed" rythm. I kept waiting for it to pick up and double up. It's good, though.

I still think I'll go with "Train" or "Casbah".

I'm gonna do one myself now. This thread talked me into it. I've got three in mind. I haven't decided yet. They're early-era songs.

If I do one (aside from with Bubba) it will be English Civil War... which coincidentally is the ringtone on my other phone.

You should do the entire Sandinista album.

Are you suggesting this as some form of self harm?

Really though, I think I'll hold off doing one for a while - don't think I'm capable of making that good a job of it yet.

Just listening to that entire album is self harm. Trying to cover it would be full on suicide.
