I very vaguely remember this thing working wen I was a kid, but it could just be a false memory or something. The speakers still have that "tunk tunk" sound when I tap on them with my finger. We'll see. I still have to find a schematic and I aint having no luck.

That's pretty awesome! I wouldn't have expected tubes in such a small appliance. This'll be so cool if you can get it up and running.

Try looking for general schematics using those tubes.
Can you tell what the tubes are or are the marking totally gone?

There is a tube chart on the back panel. I need to clean it off. Can't read it very well. The tubes appear to be original. They might be readable.

12BA6 - two of those, seems to be pentode tubes
12AV6 - double diode-triode receiver/transmitter?
35W4 - half wave rectifier - two of these
12BE6 - Heptode pentagrid converter? Wtf?

I think the 12BA6s might be the only ones suitable for guitar amp use. Maybe. No friggin idea. I've never heard of any of these tubes.

This is close (but no cigar): http://www.stereomanuals.com/man/rep/ge ... s_a_xx.htm
(I wonder how similar others in the Cxxxx line were...)

This is it, but looks like you have to sign up, and who knows if that site actually has a schematic: https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/general_e ... c_153.html
awesome youtube comment of the day
Bill and Ted time traveled and brought a bass player from 1973, a drummer from 1984 and a guitar player from 1995. Now they're spreading peace all over the world 🌎

Yup, I saw that, but I aint paying shit. Like you said, it might not even have the schematic.

I'm starting to think that I'll have to "restore" it to be a working clock radio.....or gut it and use actual guitar amp type tubes because these aint gonna cut it.

ok .... the 12BE6 is part of the tuning function .... its grids are used for tuning frequencies ..... so you can ignore that.

Also .... don't think of it as converting it into a guitar amp ..... simply think of getting it to work with an input that will accept a guitar signal.

Who knows what it'll sound like?
It's surely gonna be a one trick pony but it may be a cool trick

seems like the pentodes would be the amplifying part of it.

there used to be nothing BUT tubes in any electronic device no matter how small or cheap ..... there wasn't anything else.
Transistors weren't even invented till 1947 and didn't become really mass market 'till the 60's.
I remember well how everyone at school around 1963 suddenly had a small transistor radio they could carry around.
Prior to that everything was tubes.
And even that lots of consumer products still used tubes.

Even in the 70's you could go into ANY convenience store or drugstore and buy tubes.
They all had tube testers set up with lots of tubes available.
I remember once on the way to a gig I whipped into a Pak-A-Sak (7-11 of its day ) and bought 4 6550's for my SVT.
Tubes were literally everywhere.

I remember that even into the 80s. I used to go with my dad to Radio Shack or Sears to buy tubes for the TV. A TV would konk out and off we'd go get a new tube for it.
