Turning otherwise garbage into studio stuff. (Wall Treatment)

Post by WhiskeyJack »

Hey guys. I did another upcycle kind of thing. My wife is really big on it and to me it makes sense. rather than turf it or burn it or chuck it elsewhere why not turn it into something.

I have shitloads of old band t shirts that no longer fit my 40 year old frame and i will be honest i had a hard time trying to figure out what to do with them. I really didn't want to chuck them. I have no kids yet to hand them down to and my wife won't wear them so whats a guy to do/

Luckily i am not the only turd in the punchbowl with this problem. I wasn't alone. :happytrees: I saw something online where dudes were taking their old shirts and turning them into wall art. They would make a simple frame out of 2x2 and then cut up their shirts and staple them around the frame kind of like a painting canvas on a frame. That seemed easy enough so i gave it a try and mocked one up.

I didn't like it. It looked cheap. It was also kind of purposeless. Then i had a brain fart to take it to the next level and start using some more of my reno left overs to make some sound treatment panels! Now we're in business. :coolstorybro: So slapped together this thing. I am happy with how it turned out. not really happy with the burlap. I am going to fix that though. I thin k it needs a solid strip to fasten it down a bit better.

I'll let the photos speak for themselves. Some photos are missing. Sorry.

One of the many shirts in have in a box to do something with. I grabbed this cause it was bright and i really like the print.

this is some 1x2 i had laying around from making some doors elsewhere in the house.

Sorry for the shit quality. I thought i deleted all the blurry crap photos. made a frame based off some crude measurements of the shirt. this was the first frame that was like a wrap around canvas. But it would later turn out to end up being an inner frame for a bigger idea.

Left over piece of 1x6 pine the garage door installer left laying about. I cut this up into pieces to be an outer box to put the shirt frame in and stuff with other crap.

I smeared a little bit of this stuff on the pine. It looks o.k. It is called 'smoked oak' i picked this up for the back, sides and neck of the tele kit i am picking away at. I haven't tried this stuff on the basswood test peices yet and i think it might look a little lacklustre on the basswood. I do like it on the pine though. quite sharp.

Almost looks like moisture damaged wood a little.

all four sides. it's too bad i didn't get a picture of that box put all together. :spacepalm:

I have gobs of this shit laying around in bags and boxes in the garage. I dare say i have enouygh to make six more of these little things and two well sized bass traps. it's not rockwool or whatever the 'standard" stuff is supposed to be but it was free to me and i am sure it has an R-Value that will do some sound magic so who cares.

cut that stuff up to size and finished a delicious raspberry cream ale. Canadian Summers. Tasty.

Stuff it in the hole. #thatswhatshesaid

this was wrapped around the wife's Currant bush last winter. It is going to get stapled onto the back of the box to keep the fiberglass fibers contained.

not in love with this bit of it. I think next time i will cut up some thin strips of wood as wide as the boards, use a bit of wood glue and brad nails and add that as like a nailing strip / finish back type of thing. I forsee this just getting messy and coming apart over time.

fucking rubbish

finished.

I am fairly pleased with how it turned out. except the burlap. i am going back to the drawing board on that one. i am sure that the size of it may do little for the room overall but if i sort of plan to place these things a bit strategically in 2nd reflection points or whatever whats the harm in that? The top of it is also a pretty cool shelf as well.

Multi purpose!

Well they sure don't look like much. But whatever. All free. A coat of paint and you'd never know it was literal garbage left in my drive way by a rude neighbor fleeing town. No plans i just thought it out as I worked along. Likely missed some glaring basic construction fundamentals and my wife commented on being able to see the screws but idgaf.

Image

these are effectively going to be stands for the 6" thick corner traps. I really didn't want to screw around with finding a way to mount those things to the wall half way up so i made these stupid things. I am going to put my amp heads in one and the other will be storage for mic's cables or whatever else needs a home.

I did take a bit more time than i had planned and spun my tires for an hour or so figuring out some support to help square the shelves up. Those odd looking angular supports i jammed in the back of these uggo's took every bit of play out of these things. Impressive really what you can recall from a grade 7 shop class re: Triangles.

Image

Unsightly but they are for me and no one else is going to ever lay eyes on them save for you turkeys and the dogs. :chillin

I overlooked the fact that tweaking my amps and stuff will have to be done from sitting on the floor and i will likely have to be a bit more mindfull of dust build up that close to the floor but it really is better than my last set up.

Awesome. That looks like it will fit an amp head nicely. You might have to buy more heads!

That style of sawhorse looks awfully familiar. You get the idea on those from this guy in the video? IIRC, at the end of the video they load them up w/5+ tons of lumber, and the sawhorses held.

awesome youtube comment of the day
Bill and Ted time traveled and brought a bass player from 1973, a drummer from 1984 and a guitar player from 1995. Now they're spreading peace all over the world 🌎

Nah i wish though. An old guy i worked with described it to me over the phone amd i drew it. They turned out ok except that one of them has two wongo sized legs and makes a better rocking horse than it does a saw horse. Lol.

Ill make more some day. i think i know what i did wrong. These serve their purpose though. Gets stuff up off the ground lol.

More garbage turned into something i can use when i need it and tuck away out of sight when i dont. Also keeps it out of the landfill and save a few nickles at the lumber yard.

Crude Vocal semi isoolating booth thingy???

An old bifold door my old neighbor "kindly" left in my driveway while i was at work the day he moved out. I used to use this one and another from my own house and throw blankets over them. But after coming back to them fallen over and taking out one my good mics in the process i figured id give it a rethink.

Just adhered some old clean unused carpet to appropriate places. Clamped and added broad hinges.

Presto!! ImageImage

Eye rings & hooks so you can hang them in place from the rafters? Legs are too problematic and relying on self support is a fraught thing.
I've been saving a queen bed sized piece of "memory" foam from the tip...Foam isn't much chop I know but rolled up and stood in a corner it does reduce some bass build up. She still wants to dump it though. The wife also wanted to ditch a solid wood, chest height, narrow book case but I saved it & it now houses the less frequently used gtr pedals and other stuff that was stacked up on other things.
Cheers
