Old Stereo system with a sub woofer
Old Stereo system with a sub woofer
So I took my old Kenwood stereo system out of the family room yesterday.
I want to put in my studio but I'll have to build a stand for it.
No big deal, I have two monitor stands that I plan to bridge across with 2x4 to support the receiver, center speaker and the L/R speakers.
But the woofer.
The internet says to place the sub woofer, then play something bassy and crawl around the room to see how it sounds.
Man If I crawl around this floor I might not survive from all the spiders and other creepy shit down here.
I killed a silverfish a second ago.
Y'all got any advice on placing a sub woofer?
The room is 15'-4" x 11'-8" with a 7' ceiling.

Re: Old Stereo system with a sub woofer
I've never had much luck placing a subwoofer. I love having one, but any time I've tried to find an ideal sounding place for it, it ends up right out in the middle of everything in the room. I've never wanted to sacrifice valuable floor space so I always end up putting it under my desk and using it as a foot stool. The bass is always wonky in my rooms, but I really like kicking my feet up on the sub and feeling it in my bones.

No, I don’t really need a sub in that room. But since I have the sub, I figured why not hook it up and make it sound as best I can. Plus, I’ve learned that bugs don’t like sub woffer booming noises.

plus if we're talking old Kenwood speakers they would be less bass producing than modern speakers tend to be.
personally I hate subwoofers ..... I have one for my TV/Stereo but I rarely turn it on .... sometimes for movies but for music listening I prefer just using the Klipsch's ... they go low enough and I dislike those ultra low freqs which mostly weren't even on the older records I like.
When I listen to something like Dead Can Dance I'll use the sub so it's kinda a song by song decision

I have a sub in my tiny ass room. Like Tad, it’s under the desk.
But I need them given the HS5s don’t produce any bass at all. Should have gotten the 8s. Ah well.
It’s definitely boomy, though it’s helped a liiiitle bit with my abfusers, which is something I need more of.

Yeah, that’s another point. I had forgotten about. I rarely use the sub except for when watching movies that had the big thumps like in Jurassic Park. I had it on once during a video I was watching of Sting and that sounded pretty good.Lt. I’m thinking and hoping that I can use the sub to dial in the bass drum. Probably a fools errand, but why not?

I can't get the balance & location right - just one more thing to faff about with. Stereo is hard enough.

I got the receiver and two speakers connected.
Listening to some of my recordings of late.
I’m not getting the muffled sound some people here said.
