iMac half way in its grave

Post by CrowsofFritz »

Came home last week and found it’s stuck on the Apple loading screen. Windows still works perfectly fine, but I need both operating systems to work.

So time for a new computer.

Thankfully, I didn’t have any files that I will sorely miss go bye. What’s going to suck is having to download everything all over again. And I’ll now need a Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter due to the new computer.

I got the last intel based iMac model. Very cheap for what it is already, but that’s computer technology for you. I’ll be able to run modern games on it even though I don’t game too much, but I have been getting back into it for stress relief.

Gets here Monday :)

I am using, at this very moment, an ASPIRE V3 - 571 running W10.
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2350M CPU @ 2.30GHz 2.30 GHz
Installed RAM 10.0 GB (9.84 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
1 HDMI
1 USB2
2 USB1
It's about 15 years old and was handed down to me when my wife upgraded four years ago.
The battery can hold about 45mins of charge but I keep it plugged in. I can get a replacement battery, (this is so old it has the simple removable battery rear back they'd cost not much but no need), It takes about 10 mins to boot up fully, requires me to reinstall Firefox every week or so and using ad blockers on YOUTUBE causes it to struggle quite a bit BUT once a video is up & buffered it streams well enough, HDMI connected to an old TV the image is fine but the sound quality is pretty poor. The keypad is useless - more dead keys than working but wireless keyboard & mouse work very well so it's an old laptop that works as a media center/browser computer quite well so long as I don't expect great audio. I use it with wifi as there're no ether-net connections downstairs - the wifi works a treat despite the walls being brick.I
've been looking at mini PCs to replace it when it eventually curls up its toes.
Kim likes to have fairly new tech though she only shops, pay bills & streams with her newer machine. It does what she wants pretty well.
Cheers

Did you try replacing the battery? It may save you some time and cost. (Or it may not, depending on if that's actually the problem)

have not .... my understanding is that you can't change batteries in Mac products but if I'm wrong we'll try that.
However it is at least 12 years old ..... I would thing even in Apple world newer ones would have better performance ..... she said it's super slow.

Yeah the iMac is 10 years old, I just wish it lasted a bit longer. That said, I really need to make good use of the Time Machine feature. I’ll be sure to do that for this next one.

I’m also finally joining the 4K monitor group.

I love the rapid pace of it. It dying quick when I don’t want it to does kind of suck, but it’s all happening so fast that I can’t even imagine where things will be 100 years from now. 100 years ago we just invented refrigeration. 55 years ago we put a man on the moon. The last century has been insane.

The rate of tech change is insane but we ought to hang onto a piece of kit for as long as possible in a given circumstance. Seems you chaps have definitely done so given the age of the machines.

Oh! I'd missed that you said Mac. Yeah, I suspect changing the battery may not work then. You could ask at a mac store, but that's probably about it.

Would they even have batteries for a 2010 Mac?

15 years is amazing for a computer. I’m shocked, honestly.

I guess if it’s dedicated to one thing, it’s not too unbelievable. Mostly I do audio, but if I do want to play the latest and greatest games, it requires a full on upgrade.

yeah ..... I don't play games .... boring to me ..... shooters especially.
So my puters are audio only for the most part which is simple stuff for modern puters. I don't need a bad ass graphics card with all the processing that sucks up

I am gonna get a Metaquest though ..... but I'll prolly tend to do things like National Geographic on Mt. Everest or golf sims ..... that sorta thing.

Shooters are no fun to me. I like the Assassins Creed games where I can walk around Florence during the Renaissance or Paris during the French Revolution. They just came out with one in Japan during the Edo period I think? With this new iMac, I should be able to play on low settings.

I used to love 2000s shooters. I've probably put 200 hours into Unreal Tournament's over the years and 300 into Halos.

All those jingoistic "modern war" shooters have always felt gross to me tho.

I do remember playing Unreal Tournament 2 with my friends at his house years ago. That was wild to me that people can play from different computers and be on the same map. I was a console enjoyer then and for PS2, you needed a specific device to play online.

I had the Apple 2C version of The Hitch Hiker's Guide and have the PC version of Starship Titanic..

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hitch ... ideo_game)
https://oldgamesdownload.com/the-hitchh ... he-galaxy/
both nearly impenetrable text based games and the game based on the 2nd TLOTRings movie which I did load and play twice as I needed to demonstrate to Kim that I'd used her gift. That's about as far as I go. I supposed I played a little Whizball on a Commodore 64 in the late 80s.

I’ll take some screenshots of some games and post them here. These games look incredibly beautiful nowadays.

I wish Assassin’s Creed had a mode where killing isn’t allowed and you can just walk and climb and look around. My dad would actually play that. And he’s 75.

Hitchhiker's Guide! I played that one. My dad had the complete Infocom collection (with walkthroughs, thank goodness) at one point.

I just bought a photo-realistic game released last month. We’ll see if this new iMac can even run it. Soon I’ll post pictures of these games. They’re gorgeous. Free roam games where you can just walk and do things like have a drink or play chess or drive around or sail to sea are the best.
