Soldering Adventure

Post by musicturtle »

So maybe this is not an adventure for some(looking at you @Greg_L) but for me, I have not done very much soldering since my high school days in electronics lab.

I have this old Yamaha multi-effects processor(bought it in 1989-90) and I love some of the sounds in it. I am gonna try and play some live gigs and need reverb, but this output jacks on this short out unless I wedge something underneath. The last thing I want is for this unit to stop working completely in the middle of a gig.

I took it apart and noticed some cracks in the solder connecting the input jacks to the PCB. So out will come my little soldering iron and I will attempt fix this thing up.(And also fix one of the shorts in my Shure SM58 microphone as well).

Wish me luck!

When I do that kind of stuff I always use a solder sucker first to get the old stuff off. A little more fiddly but generally more reliable results. YMMV.

Good luck.

Thanks guys.

Well I worked quick and hot, and although I did not see your comment @muttley before starting I did keep the tip clean and tinned.

I did not clean all the old solder off, though, I don't have a solder sucker :)

Just tested everything out and it all works fine.

Almost too easy, we'll see if it lasts

Excellent.
That unit has some wonderful stuff. ALL f the distortion is awful but everything else is useful and some stuff, like the shimmer, is fab.
Cheers

Yeah, I love the vocal reverb preset.

I have used it live for a long time on my vocals and my acoustic guitar though an effects send on my little mixer.

Many, many moons ago I used it as my guitar effects unit with a midi pedal board when I played in bands.

Ran it through a 1980s Solid State Marshall, think it was a Mosfet 100.
