Weight concern

Post by CrowsofFritz »

So I did a tiny bit of rearranging in my studio room because I was concerned I was concentrating too much weight in one corner. With the rack, chair, table, gear, and me all in one corner, I’d say it’s 1,000 lbs (454 kgs) in about 30-40 square feet of space.

So I removed the amp and pedalboards from that area. That probably only relieved 70 lbs, but it eased my paranoia a bit.

I’ve read that it’s 40 lbs per square feet, which would mean I’m fine just doing simple arithmetic, but I don’t exactly know how that works.

I’m on the second floor, btw.

I don't know much about how buildings are constructed in the US, and more specifically yours, but I wouldn't imagine you'd have too many issues with a reasonable amount of gear in the floor space footprint said gear takes up, so long as the substructure is in reasonable condition. You don't have anything THAT heavy there...
Well, the heaviest thing is still me :D

Without sitting in the chair, it’d knock off 160 lbs. But I figured I should redistribute the weight a bit so it’s not all concentrated. I don’t know what else I can move except the subwoofer now—another 40 lbs.

If everything is in the corner and we can assume that everything framed in correctly , joist spacing is correct and things are sitting in their respective sill plates and all that to code, this shouldn't even be taking up space in your head dude.

Maybe, if you had all that shit piled up in the very middle of the floor in a very big pile you might get some floor sag but in the corner you shouldn't have anything much to worry about.

How did you even start getting worried about that ?

I had a water bed upstairs in a cheapo townhouse apartment one time and it sagged the floor. If that cheap ass slum apartment could hold a fucking king size waterbed your place can handle a few amps in a corner.

Actually I worry about such stuff so don't feel weird. I have a raised house and in one room had a TON of gear and it did worry me but no problem.

IF the limit is 40lbs per sq ft then you're way under the limit as it would allow 1600lbs in 40 sq ft.

However that 40lbs per sq ft can't be right as a 250lb man only takes up 2 square feet which would be 125lbs per sq ft

Be careful of which schiz you opt for as the less commonly known is schizoid as opposed to schizophrenic.
Schiziod, (as in 21st century Schizoid Man), :Schizoid personality disorder is a personality disorder characterized by a lack of interest in social relationships, a tendency toward a solitary or sheltered lifestyle, secretiveness, emotional coldness, detachment, and apathy. Affected individuals may be unable to form intimate attachments to others and simultaneously possess a rich and elaborate but exclusively internal fantasy world
While Schizophrenic, (as in what folk used to think was multiple personality),: Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking and behavior.
I'm about 65kg but am working on a slab of concrete and working on the extra 5kg too...as in removing it. In my 1st house, a raised timber floor on joists etc. I had a Marshall Super bass on top of an huge Etone 200w cab siting half way along a wall and a Rhodes electric piano, (REAL beast of a thing), nearby. The floor didn't creak, wobble or sag. The room was full of gear, though none heavier than the things mentioned, and it was F. I. N. E.
Cheers

@Greg_L Did you really have a fucking waterbed? Did you have a past career as a pimp or something?

Yeah, that’s what I saw online and why I don’t get it. Maybe that’s averaged out to the whole room. Anyway, a bit of productivity came about from this because I do like the rearrangement I made with my amps and pedals. They were kind of in the way at the table.

Ha no but it was the early 90s and I had just moved into my own place and had a little single guy money so I bought myself a waterbed.

I’ve slept on a water bed before. They aren’t bad! As long as it’s filled enough so it’s not sagging—so much like an air mattress in that regard, but I’d say it’s better than an air mattress.

It was actually. It sloshed around a lot which was kind of fun in a rock-you-to-sleep sort of way. And it was temp controlled so you could heat/cool it to your liking.

After a while though you miss a normal bed. I got this padded bag thing that goes around the water bladder part that sort of dampened the sloshing. That helped a lot make it feel more like a normal bed.

They're also a real bitch to tear down and set up and at that time I moved around a lot so I got rid of it.

Wait, do you actually have paranoid schizophrenia?

Anyway, to the topic, I'd use a baby grand as a reference. Browsing Yamaha's site, their smallest pianos are 600 pounds at 25 sq ft. Their next size up are 1000 pounds in 30 sq ft. That's getting pretty close to the 40 lb/sqft lt bob was referring to. And all of that weight is focused on 3 two-inch casters.

I wouldn't worry too much about your gear.

I've been looking them up 'cos I sleep terribly - years of boxing, plus general surfer's lower back pain and a couple of other injuries make it really hard for me to get comfortable. I'm fine during the day and it doesn't bother me, but when I'm trying to lay still at night I noticed that I'm uncomfortable - its not quite pain, just a bit of discomfort.

Anyway - they tend to be about 600W, say I have it switched on for 10hrs, and electricity is about 20pence/kWh - it would cost me 8 quid a week just to go to bed. Fuck that, I'd rather spend money on various fancy pillows.

Dude we just switched to a "hotel" type mattress with the absolute most thinnest pillow topper on it and it has been a game changer for me. We had a king size ultra comfort mattress before and it felt like i was sleeping on a marshmallow and while it weas comfy it was doing a number on the skeleton who lives inside my meat suit. He was VERY unhappy. When we had to live out of the hotel last summer i got instantly better after a week of sleeping on their mattresses. Did some research and got a model like that with less of a pillow top and i haven't looked back. I also sleep with a nice firm memory foam pillow between my knees too now as the request of my physio therapist and thta has made some really positive chnages for how my lower back feels.

This is the one we got.

Schizoaffective if I’m being more accurate. With meds, delusions are downgraded to major anxiety and depression is lessened. Don’t really get mania much.

Overall a downright no good unfun very bad time.

Yeah, that looks good. Next time we go get a mattress I want to go to the bed shop and try a load out. Wife got this from online reviews and I've never liked it.
