SansAmp

Post by JD01 »

I've had a shit Behringer SansAmp clone for years... I think it's a bit shit, it's kinda done the job but I've never thought my bass sound is anything other than OK.

There's heaps of options for SansAmp units from little pedals with a handful of knobs to rack units... anyone got recommendation?

I was seriously considering the Geddy Lee model for a bit.

But ultimately what I ended up doing was getting a boost pedal and a Flamma CAB sim

Yeah, I won't be getting a Geddy Lee one... but I really think I've reached the end of the road with my 25 quid Behringer one.

or grab a cheap modeler. I'd donate ya' one but I think we've established that shipping to you is crazy .... but you could use a POD or old J-Station and that stuff is cheap

Yeah, while it would be nice have some nice chunky solid state piece of metal... a basic software model is probably easiest.

how?
You plug into the modeler and plug it into your interface .... how is plugging into your interface and dealing with a plug in any easier?

I was just thinking of a VST, something like and old pod would also work.

I use the Behringer BDI21 less often than I used to for drive BUT I do use it as a DI box for anything I plug in - I like the balanced out to interface part. On a few songs recently I've used an old freebie for the old fashioned FAT tone https://rekkerd.org/ronald-passion-rele ... ss-preamp/ but it does all sort of tones...
I've been playing around with using my outboard compressor etc. with bass too. I bought a splitter so I can DI & mic my amp too.

That's actually pretty interesting. My own previous bass setting was more interesting than what I have now.

O do use this ITB almost always on bass as it has a good "pin down" preset for bass and another good one for 12 string.

Sansamp has been making stuff for at least 30 years, there has to be something on the used market that is affordable.

Had a quick look on reverb, everything i saw immediately was under $200.

WWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY do people demoing basses SLAP 1st?
My current theory is that SLAP is the bedroom/youtube not interacting with other people or making music bass player default.

I bloke I worked with, & did some recording with as well, bought an original guitar Sansamp when he was traveling in the USA towards the end of the 90s. Just before he flew there his Fender Twin Reverb was stolen & was, naturally, uninsured. It was the GT1 - the one with DIP switches. He recorded an album with it...in a real studio & to tape. That struck me as very odd indeed. If I were spnding that money I'd at least rent an amp. It sounded okay but he wasn't into breakup tones etc. anyway.

When I got a good active DI box it improved my bass sound.

Then I just use sims to tailor the sound for the specific song.

I have been using the SansAmp clone plugin that @WhiskeyJack turned me onto several years ago and dig it but I cant play bass for shit. But I have also been wanting something better for recording bass. I have been eyeballing both of these and likely will grab one in 2025:

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... p-v2-pedal

That Aguilar is most appealing to me due to its mid section. But the price is a lot for something I wont use much.

I used to have an RDN1 but honestly I could barely tell the difference between it and just straight into the interface. But again, I cant play bass for shit so likely my fault.

I can tell you that most of the touring bass players that come through the venue I work in use a Sansamp Bassdriver DI regardless of if they are playing through an amp. And even if they are using an amp they usually want the DI sent to the monitors and not a micd cab. Especially if they're using in ears. For home recording, I think this is a great way to do it.

Still haven't decided what to do.
Hopefully I'll have some time tomorrow to experiment with a few of the bass plugins recommended. If I can get a sound I like that would obviously be cheap and easy, I don't want a million options which is why a SansAmp appeals. @Bubba also sent me some stuff and his bass always sounds good

What's your actual bass JD? Didn't Bubba buy an actual Precision or something?
