Choose a New/Old Bass Day

Post by musicturtle »

A friend of mine's husband is downsizing his collection and offered to gift a couple of basses to me and the school I where I teach.

One of these has got to be from the 80s...it is an old Westone. The other is a much newer acoustic/electric Boulder Creek four string.

I basically get the choice on which one to call mine and which one is the school's.

I know nothing about either brand or model except that on a quick google search that there is Westone like this one on Reverb and the ask is $1000.

The Boulder Creek new is around the same price.

I am leaning towards the Boulder Creek since I already have an electric bass at home.

I have an acoustic electric bass. Kim bought it for me. I very rarely play it as it's both cumbersome and I REALLY dislike the tone of the things. I've tried to find places for it in the mix of various things and haven't been successful. I can see/hear the acoustic being useful in the classroom - bright, projects well, a kid could probably get inside it. BUT, if you've an electric that's better than the one on offer...

All other things being equal, I would highly recommend the more robust instrument being the one for the school. It's gonna get beat up.

But comparing an acoustic and an electric... I'd lean towards take the acoustic to the school unless you're worried about it getting mangled by kids. An electric requires an amp, etc in order to be useful, but an acoustic can just play along the rest of the band without.

In my mind a kid would be more interested in an electric instrument. I know when I was a kid an electric guitar was infinitely cooler than an acoustic instrument.

Still is.

So let the kids rock.

Yep - I'd keep the electric one for the kiddies and take the acoustic one myself in that situation - I presume given the nature of the donation the kids take priority. You may find a use for the acoustic one in recording... I've never played one, myself.
