Wired Mic
Wired Mic
I'm seeing a bunch of SM7b mics come up at a good price described as "wired" I've no idea what that means.
Its always the ones described as wired that are cheaper than the others. Most of the others are just described as an SM7b mic and they're, as expected, over 300 quid.

I'll snap up an SM7b for 180 quid... if its actually just a normal SM7b

Re: Wired Mic
My assumption would be it's a normal mic requiring a normal mic cable - that being the wire - and not a cordless variety.
But if the seller can't get the terminology correct, what are you actually buying? Retail on those is over $800 here.

Re: Wired Mic
I don't know wtf that means but Shure mics are some of the most chinese knockoff counterfeited mics out there.
If it's a deal too good to be true it probably is.

Re: Wired Mic
I'm more than a little sketched out by that ebay listing. All of the pictures are of just the box, the security label/sticker is in Chinese, and they're selling "new unopened" SM7b for just over $200 USD. That all adds up to it likely being a fake. Not certain, but likely.
And Greg's probably right...since the SM57 is renowned as the world's most counterfeited mic, I wouldn't have any doubts that the SM7b is right up there as well after its surge in popularity in the last several years. I think the SM7b was number 2 or 3 on Reverb's year-end list of most popular mics of 2022, right after the SM57. Those things have been red hot for the last few years, after Twitch and YouTube streamers made it the must-have mic to use while other people watch you play video games.

Lol truth. That is the official podcast/gamer nerd mic.Tadpui wrote: ↑Fri Mar 10, 2023 12:54 pm I'm more than a little sketched out by that ebay listing. I think they're pretty overrated actually. They were originally touted for loud vocalists. No one sings so fucking loud that they need a special mic for it.

They're fine for what they are - just a mic. There are better, and/or less stupidly bulky mics that do anything an SM7b does.

Re: Wired Mic
Yeah, if I end up getting one, I'll get a new one from an actual music shop.
I'm pretty happy with my R0de NT1 at the moment. I just have to make sure that I have the curtains closed and am facing one of the wall panels or it gets very roomy! (in a bad way). I would like a good dynamic vocal mic though.

Re: Wired Mic
Then what are you looking for in a dynamic vocal mic that a 57/58 doesn't do?
They're used live for vocals all the time.

Re: Wired Mic
ya' know, not to be contrary ...... I don't have one.
I actually dislike the SM58 and find the SM57 to be acceptable but that's about it.
Never have liked them very much.
I have a buttload of EV mics ( seriously ..... prolly 15 of them) .... and about 7 MXLs, 1 Audio Technica, a Rode NT1 and a MonoPrice ribbon .... nary a Shure.
Re: Wired Mic
Something that doesn't sound so nasal for vocals.
In the same way that an i5 sounds nicer than a 57
Re: Wired Mic
i5s don't sound nicer than 57s. They sound different. Nicer is subjective.
Anyway try an RE20

Re: Wired Mic
Yeah, I should have said I prefer an i5 to a 57.
Re: Wired Mic
It's a very popular mic. Given it's high price, noise level, the amount of gain needed for it, the proximity effect it's known for I suspect it's the look of it that gets the podcasters in.
Julian Krause uses it as it's the worst case scenario for most interfaces.

Your gear economy is wack. They're only about 40 bucks difference over here.
