Feel the Beat

Post by musicturtle »

A song about beat

@JD01 I tried to channel your phaser sound in my sim. Of course without your chops, H&K and several other reasons your sound is great, I fell short, but I still like the result.

Any critiques and comments are always welcome.

Drums are Addictive Drums, keys/snyth is Applied Acoustid Systems Ultra Analog.

Live bass and guitar albeit through Cubase's Amp Sims.

Jeeze man really well done. I would say that the kick ain't got no balls to it. I can't really hear it all that well. The mix is a bit bright but i am on the fence if it is to it's detriment.

Also i am picking up some weird "BOMP" "BONKS" in what i assume is the bass track? maybe? Kinda makes it feel like a drippy metronome run through a wah pedal or something? If it was intentional great, if not it just kind of sounds a bit weird because it is in and out of the song kind of inconsistently. Like no real pattern to speak off.

I like the twinkly little synths.

Full Disclosure musicturtle: I hate nit picking your tracks i think are intended for your teaching job because i just feel like a dick for completely missing the point.

haha, what phaser are you using? I think it sounds pretty cool actually.

Feet walking down the street... steady beat... depends if you're walking back from the pub.

Only comment is that its really bright. Those phasers tend to shelf off a lot of low end, and the synth you're using doesn't exactly sound bassy!
My old phaser was a Tone City Summer Orange and that was always really bright.

I'm I the first to say that this sounds like Shout by Tears For Fears?

WhiskeyJack don't hold back on criticism. I always take it with the grain of salt anyway and even if they are for teaching I want them to sound good! Yes I wanted the bass to have that weird warble to it. I will look into the bass drum and maybe bring it up some.

JD01 The phaser is just the built in one in the Cubase Amp Rack. Actually, the whole sound is just one of their presets called Funky Phaser or something like that. I liked it so I kept it the way it was. The Tears For Fears reference I get for sure. The rhythm of BEAT, BEAT and SHOUT, SHOUT are the same but it that's about it except maybe for vocal range.

Both of you mentioned it being bright, I may give that a tweek as well. Made a little cartoonish video for it and played it for the kids today. Went over pretty well :)

I was gonna say it's really vocal forward. But if it's for teaching kids, that's not a bad thing.

So TMBG already came up today, but this does kinda sound like one of their children's songs. (No, I Like Fun, etc.)

Perfect for the audience.
The kick is more click that thud but that'll translate better in terms of marking the beat across a range of speakers.
The vocal gets a little buried later on and may need a slight boost to keep the instruction clear.
Cheers

So, what's your teaching job? This is an awesome song for kids! Love it! I can just see Sesame Street using this (hopefully I'm on the right track, if not, I have mud on my face!) Can't really comment on the mix as I am pretty much a novice. I really enjoyed it.
If I knew what I was doing, I'd be dangerous!

sounds great except it's too bright.
And if it's for kids, well they still have their hearing in the upper freqs so it's prolly especially bright for them.

But the tune and playing is awesome .... especially for the target audience

Thanks, yeah I toned down some of the highs for the final version for video.

My headphones and my car are not bright at all. So that is probably why it turned out that way at first.
