Jet Plane - John Denver Cover

Post by JD01 »

Alright, was recording with my niece again this afternoon which was fun :)

Tell me what you think of this - 2nd guessed myself heaps with the overall vocal level and the level of the snare in the mix. Guitars were up and down a bit too, but I think I'm happy enough with them now.

Cheers,

Cool!

Something seems to have happened to the vocal in V2; it sounds thinner and/or more distant than V1 (though it got back to "normal" in the pre-chorus).

I like the harmonies in the choruses.
awesome youtube comment of the day
Bill and Ted time traveled and brought a bass player from 1973, a drummer from 1984 and a guitar player from 1995. Now they're spreading peace all over the world 🌎

Yeah, weird that isn't it. I don't know what's going on there. I think it's cos she wasn't sure if the lyrics so doesn't deliver them as well.

Initially V2 sounded louder and more spikey than the other verses so I moved it down to its own track and mixed it more quietly.

Yeah the vocal is more distant in V2.
Maybe she was just further from the mic in V2 cos she was glancing at an iPad with the lyrics on it.

Sounds reasonable - you adjust the level and MAYBE a little EQ to cover any proximity difference and be sweet.

It's weird that that verse seemed louder. Oh well.

This mix sounds really polished and vocal forward. Honestly, I might say too polished. It gets that Radio Disney vibe.

Sounds good JD. Interesting take on this song for sure. I will add that yes, something about the 2nd verse vocal is lacking in presence for some reason. The first verse and the chorus parts sound great to me though. In the pre-chorus sections I would think about adding something to fill it up a bit, a nice wet guitar strum that rings or something. I know you change up the guitar a bit there, it just feels lacking to me still though.

Anyway just my two cents. Nice playing as always, and I really like her voice, she sings well.

Yeah, it’s a fantastically boring song on the guitar... particularly when played like that... when I read your post an idea came to mind for the prechorus actually. Cheers.

Your cover is way better than the original but this version with Cass on harmony vocals is pretty cool. (Oh, I loathe Denver).
Even with her voice the pre chorus is bland. Mind you the chorus soars with her.

I love this. Great energy.

Not much I don't like about this. Guitars sound great. In the last verse they kind of lack energy. But elsewhere they're great.

Drums sound great. Snare is really popping.

I would have liked some more fleshed out harmonies in the chorus. They're so beautiful in the original. It was pretty simplistic here.

But all in all, I thought this was great.
