Wahoo Is My Waifu - new VHS original

Post by vomitHatSteve »

Morning! I just finished the initial mix of my latest song.

I kind of rushed things because I'm behind schedule on putting it out (baseball season started almost a week ago!)

So I'd love feedback on it!

The narrative gets skewed a bit & I don't mean gender wise...

Seductive, reductive, Wahoo is my waifu
Don't prejudge our love, Wahoo is my waifu
From Cleveland to Japan, he's been there my whole laifu
Otaku, I love you. Wahoo is my waifu

I know Otaku - obsessive, loner/lonely almost agoraphobic anime/manga fan.
Waifu - the chosen singular obsession of many otaku - male or female - usually in the physical world as a dakimakura.
BUT, Wahoo is a fish.
Then again in the Otaku world that isn't so outlandish.
I like the song but not the drums.
I reckon this needed full Anime theme song arrangements complete with a Miku pedal.

Deviant is a pretty good site. I used to buy Juxtapoz until they stopped distributing in Oz.

This wasn't what I expected when I clicked on it! Unlike your normal Regdar stuff. Its also the length of a normal song!

When the bass and bit crushing comes in at 1:22 is sounds great.
Don't like the drum sound - you're probably going for that really gamey kind of sound though, the snare sounds really dry to me.
Also, when the Rhythm guitar comes in at 1:35 it might be a bit loud, and it also feels a bit dry and centred. Sounds double tracked, but are they tracked with exactly the same sound? and not panned that wide?

At 2:50 there's kind of a drum build up but you can barely hear it, so you don't get impact in the next section. Its this section where I think the drum sound you're going for is really letting you down. I know you don't give a fuck about them sounding like a really drummer but I do think you'd benefit from a bigger sound.

The fade with the bit crushing at 3:45 sounds cool, you should keep the weird noises going on for a bit longer when the clean guitar comes in.

This is my favourite Regdar song though, mate - its a good one.

Chief Wahoo, the mascot, not the fish! I hadn't thought of how almost none of the jokes work if you're not familiar with American baseball! :D (I'm very proud of these lyrics)

Thanks for the feedback!

Miku pedal: I don't have one of those, but I do have the underlying software and have already sequenced her doing the last verse. (Rushed mix. It'll be in v2)
Length and arrangement: I was going for an Americana/heartland rock vibe. You can't get away with those songs being 2 minutes long!
Drums: As with all Regdar songs, I've got a mix of conventional drums (EZD in this case) and glitchy, randomized drums. I can mess with the glitch drums to see if there are better sounds for that (or possibly just turn them down). Do the conventional sequenced drums sound ok tho?
Drum build-up at ~2:50: I can add some more sequenced drums to emphasize that, yeah.
Guitars: Yeah, I could probably pan things out from the center a bit more.

I'm not familiar with the site deviant... I was talking about deviantart.com

I just think you conventional drums (EZ Drummer style drums) don't sound realistic and even they manage to have a bit of a computer game feel to them.

I don't quite understand. Are you lamenting the rampant political correctness that has killed Chief Wahoo?

But the mix...I think it's pretty good. To me it's typical Regdar stuff. Quirky and weird and odd but it it's listenable. It sounds like I think it's supposed to.

Heck no! I think it's kind of an awful character that needs to be retired!

I'm mocking both midwestern kids who casually appropriate aboriginal American cultures for their sports fandom and midwestern kids who casually appropriate Japanese culture for their anime fandom.

Thanks for the listen!

Ah yes, I see.

But midwestern kids have no culture, that's why they appropriate other cultures. :coolstorybro:

Haha! Yeah, really can't fault 'em for it.

Mix 2 is up at the same link. That took way too long to update cause computers are jerks.

Changes:
Guitars are panned out more. (Thanks for pointing that out! The one guitar was overall entirely centered!)
Vocaloid last verse
More room mic on the drums in the beginning to make them less bleep-bloopy
Better build before bridge

Thanks! Keep it coming!

That's the one I was too lazy to type the entire name and assumed you'd get the part for art.

I think I'm starting to get a handle on your weirdness a bit now, Steve. The vocals work really well as usual. There's a midrangey saturated set of harmonics that come in at 0:40 - they crowd out the vocal and interrupt the narrative. I think they could come down a bit. I absolutely love the tone of the bass instrument that you're using - what is it?

Anyway. I love this. The song is awesome, the subject matter is original and on point. I want it on the Rebel Radio playlist.

Am I enthusing too much? It's great. It's really, really great.

Great.

Thanks, Bubba!

I'm calling it on the mix since I need to get it released. (I hear you on the midrangey harmonics, but I don't think it's so bad I'll have to worry about it)

Music video!
[BBvideo=560,315]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4ROgJf5nWY[/BBvideo]

I call the instrument "The Abomination".
I had a build thread in the other forum, but they seem to have stripped the images. :(

I should just get some custom Mutt Pups for the instrument instead of my janky home-built version!

I sometimes play the kick & hats on my own (never another's) drum kit with bare feet... :stirthepot:
awesome youtube comment of the day
Bill and Ted time traveled and brought a bass player from 1973, a drummer from 1984 and a guitar player from 1995. Now they're spreading peace all over the world 🌎

Love the ending. Is that some sort of circuit bent mic you are singing through neat the end?

This thread got weird overnight! I'm always barefoot when I play. I'm barefoot right now! It's how I play the DDR pad.

The last verse is a Vocaloid. i.e. software-synthesized - hence why it sounds so weird.
The last (acapella) chorus is just my voice layered up 10 times with a ton of reverb. Nothing particularly special.

This is a real ear-worm, Steve. I had it stuck in my head when I was down the beach earlier.
