Another Lt. Boob Job

I did this one early in the year. I listened to it a while back and I really hated the mix. I re-did everything except the lead vocal and some of the harmony tracks. New guitars, bass, drum kit, drum part, additional guitar part, new mix, ...

I also came across a video on using mid-side processing during mastering. So I tried it on this one. It made a bigger difference than I thought it would. It creates both depth and width that aren't there otherwise.

I was about to say, this title seems familiar. The guitar toans are really really good, and I can tell that from my freaking iPad speakers. Will be a bit till I can listen on my good headphones, though, so I’ll come back.

I might dig up the old one to A/B, but right off the bat, I don't know that I'm liking that snare. It's too dominant. Maybe taking it down a few notches would help?

Jesus, yeah - that snare is a bit Phil Collins. This mix also sounds like its pumping a bit to me.
really think you need to re-think the snare and ease off the limiter a bit on this one.

Hey man. thanks for posting the original link. I am nerd when it comes to being able to A/B something.

This mix does indeed sound a bit more full than the last one but that snare is mega in the mix. I agree with the others. I also feel like the mix might also be a bit too loud. Or maybe it is the bass is kind of over powering? It is definitely right up front with the vocals to my ears.

It is an improvement over the other though for sure in terms of fullness.

Thanks guys. I'll put up a new mix tonight. I'll pull down the snare and maybe nudge back the limiter. I'll give a listen to the bass. But I know I liked the levels of the low end a week ago. We'll see.

Mix #2 at the top.

Changes:

The snare had a 6db boost in the mid 4Ks. I must have been playing around with stuff and left it in. And then I was paying so much attention to other stuff I didn't notice. Anyway, after I took that out, I still lowered it by a db. It's a quite different snare sound.

I also ended up lowering the bass and kick by a bit. The low end was a nudge too heavy.

Then I backed off the limiter on the master buss.

Mix 2 is much better. Did notice the toms are panned weirdly wide though.

Just have too say, I love your lyrics, always clever and subtle, makes me smile when I read them.
2nd mix , sounds pretty full to me, has "your" sound, power pop to me which I dig.
Drums, specifically snare much better in 2nd mix .

Snare is definitely improved in mix 2.

Comparing with the old version, it's definitely fuller and smoother.
