We'll Go Down

Post by CrowsofFritz »

Okay, I feel better about this one than the last one. I was reading about doing Queen vocal harmonies and how many sheer layers they did. So I tried to do that in this song. It doesn't sound like Queen because it's not a Queen like song and I'm not Freddie Mercury, but I can see how the effect would sound just like it if a FM sound alike would do it.

Sounds like a Pacific Island/Torres Strait song with the harmonies.
Are you singing "sound"? If you are the "d" is missing.
That could move into a Violent Femmes Country Death Song sort of thing.
Interesting...the lop sided stereo image bothered me at first but I moved on.

I'm a big fan of stacking up a ton of vocals.
In this case, I'd be inclined to do some tight editing to get rid of all between-phrase noise to keep everything clean.

It's hard to sound like queen especially since they had 4 guys layering all those parts.

THREE, John Deacon didn't sing.
According to Brian May they usually did three takes, each with three voices, to get the chordal tones & harmonies for a song - nine voices each one singing something different often bounced down to a single track or stereo. They didn't have enough multi tracks to do one voice per track.
Yes, layering adds noise -- background, breath, lip smack etc.

I like the multi tracked vocal sound. Very nice. The lead vocal has a nice clarity to it. I might roll off a little low end off of it.

The guitar is really low end heavy and missing quite a bit of top end. Maybe the mic was too close to the sound hole? Sounded like it might be.

I'd also back off the reverb level a bit and shorten the decay just a bit.

A real nice song.

I thought they initially did three people and then Freddie Mercury did the rest of the layers, even on tracks that have other instruments on it in other parts of the song.

You get a prize! It was close to the sound hole. You should have heard it before I scooped some of the lows lol. Thanks for listening!

At the 19 minute mark.
It's Beato so a little annoying but May does the speaking.
I had read the same in various places but hearing BM say it is decent enough confirmation for me.

It's the dumb, nerdy stuff an 18 year old who saw them in 76 would know.
I haven't liked anything they've released since 76 either.

I’ve seriously been binging them recently. I just bought two of their CDs today. Night at the Opera is a masterpiece. I think it’s underrated on The Rolling Stones best albums of all time.

ANATO is a masterpiece of studio manipulation but most of the songs don't hold up too well, not even after five years for an old man like me. I have my original LP from release, the 1st issue CD and the Surround Sound version too. The surround is interesting to be immersed in but it lacks the power the rockier songs had. Surrround rarely manages to match or beat the full frontal assault of stereo.

In terms of rock music and excellent recording within limited technology the 1st three albums are ace. Sheer heart Attack, the third, is more of a pop rock LP but it still rocks and all three have some humour to them.

They were pretty good live in 76...they only did snippets of Bo Rhap, (there was a band on the other side of town in a club doing a much better, and more complete, version on the same night). When they were excellent live was when they played riffy rock. There wasn't much call n response, you sing it bullshit either.

This is great, man! That new mic really suits your voice, and it sounds great across the whole spectrum, especially when you hit the lower register. BG vocals all sound great as well. The guitar sounds a little muddy for some reason, something down in the low mids maybe, but I can't really pinpoint where.

Damn, I'm sold on that TLM mic. This really shows how detailed it is without it being obnoxious. It's not hyped or anything, just really detailed. I'd say you've got a keeper there!

Thanks, Tad! I really like the new mic. Maybe you can forgo the U87 and just buy the TLM :D
