Half Life of Truth happening bit by bit

Post by rayc »

This is rather in the slow, atmospheric groove of the last thing I finished.
It began as me trying to find a way to use an E minor chord based thing I first stumbled across in about 82.
I used the arpeggio for a song in a band I was in at the time called The Teutonics.
I was playing it, found a drum pattern and decided to build on it.
I wrote a set of lyrics but could only get snatches of melody to fit at different times on different days so I simply recorded the vocal parts as they came to me and left about 30% of the lyrics on the page.
The bloke from Spirit level - Scott Collingwood wanted to have a bash at it so it has his leads all over it.
The singer from the same collab wants to have a crack at it too.
Other than Scott's leads this is me + BIAB drums, HIGH ahhs & organ. Lots of Mel and FX500 stuff.
It's not finished.
I know most people will want the vocal levels UP in the mix and I have tried that - probably will do again.
being that it's my voice it's buried as per usual.

there's a a very obvious lyrical nod done.
Your suggestions and thoughts are appreciated...

The ahs.. are they too loud? I think so but the singer wants them loud.
The ramped up sound leading into the solo ...to loud?
The whispers...more reverb?
And so one...

THIS mix is where I hear the vocal level...wrapped in gauze and rightfully interred.

FINAL MASTERED version.

THE HALF LIFE of TRUTH
You weren’t really here
Just something I’d hoped

Paranoia gaining
fast, fast, so fast.

The half-life of truth
A chain reaction of lies
Broken promises compound
Right before your eyes.

Whispers become louder over time

No lunatics upon the grass
No faces pressed against the glass

And slow decay
to last, last and last

The half-life of truth
A chain reaction of lies
Broken promises compound
Right before your eyes

Talk becomes louder over time

Paranoia gaining
fast, fast, fast, so fast.

The half-life of truth
A chain reaction of lies
Broken promises compound
Right before your eyes

Screams become louder over time

Love it ! On my headphones mix feels good for this type of dreamy vibe, lead vocals maybe come up a little , very nice playing all around ...bass got a little distorted leading into last "the half-life of truth..." part , not sure if intentional , but I liked it ! :>)
Great job Ray

I like this one.
I'm gonna go against the advice you usually receive and recommend that the vocals could be more washed out and buried.

Thanks Gene,
Yes, that bass section has a "TubeScreamer" type VST to give it some grind for a couple of bars.

Thanks Steve,
I agree re the vocals...the level in the current mix was for the potential alternate vocalist to hear the "melody".
He's opted out as of this morning so I'll drop it back into the hole and scatter the flowers.

NEW MIX in OP.

Better. I might go more FX and a bit more volume. The goal is unintelligible more than inaudible, right?

I'm listening to mix 2. The vocal definitely needs to come up. Just try that for a start.

Mix 1 was pretty good. But every nit I could come up with in mix 1, you addressed in mix 2. It sounds really good. Great Floyd vibe (and lyrical nod).

You addressed the vocal level. But I'll still mention that I think it should come up to a "typical" level. It sounds like a good vocal. Love to hear what it sounds like if it were at a typical level.

But the instrument bed, as I said, sounds really really good.

Thanks @TripleM ,
the final version is done. The vocals are as loud as I'm comfortable with...I did try louder but the failings in my croak become to obvious at higher levels.
Thansk to all who commented & offered suggestions - all were attempted.

Listening to master, I think you nailed it, vocals fit the vibe and to me, are a better level then earlier mix. Like the guitar noodling , cool tone and style.

I think the vocal level is OK now. I'd probably nit pick and say they could be a bit higher. But we're talking about very minor stuff at that point.

It sounds great.

I know it's final, and I didn't notice this the first time. But the open high hats in the beginning are at a rather constant volume. Assuming these are midi, you might want to go back and vary the volumes. Just a thought.

Love those Floyd style guitars. Really cool vibe.

Thanks MMM,
The drums are a stereo file so I could've done some mid side EQ if I knew how.

Loved it Ray...it reminded me of Air, all youd need was some synth sounds but the dreaminess and vocals were very like Air.

Listened to the last mix on your original mix and the latest one. The vocals are much better in the latest. Can't really discern "ah's" from the instruments but that's probably intentional. Awesome tone on the lead guitar!!
Cool song!
If I knew what I was doing, I'd be dangerous!
