Were the guitar and bass tones recorded by sticking a mic on a real amp? That's totally impressive for a beginner recordist!
I really like the first :30. The different guitar and synth tones and noodling lines makes for interesting stuff. The rest seems like a different song, though. It could use more noodling interspersed along the rest of the tune. I agree with @CrowsofFritz's suggestion for adding some vocal harmonies.
I don't get the super-long pauses at the end of each chorus; they're about 3X longer than they should be. (On first listen, I thought the song was over at the one minute mark.)
I think that the bass was recorded through an amp, at least that's what it sounded like. He sent me both wet and dry tracks, and the bass sounded the same in both, so I'm assuming that it wasn't an amp sim. He's mainly a bass player, so I figure it was an amp, but that's just a guess. I'll ask him!
I was a little taken aback by the long pauses upon first listen as well. Of course by this point, I've listened to the song so many times that they've just become part of the scenery

If it were my song, I probably would have shortened them to 4 bars each.
Thanks for the input, Dan!

I liked it. I thought it was a really cool song.
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I liked the synth. I thought it worked well in the tune. I didn't like it in the breakdown at ~2 min mark where it's almost by itself. But when it's a pad instrument I liked it.
Lead guitar sounds terrific.
When you blast it, the bass has a ton of low end. Too much to me. There might be a little low end problem in the vocal, but it's tough to tell for sure.
Thanks Trips! I like the song as well, I was impressed that a newbie came up with it. I guess that's why I've been so enamored with it. Honestly I like the synth as well, it adds some texture. I probably could turn it down a bit just to keep it from getting overbearing in that breakdown.
So it sounds like he's going to run with this mix, although I'll probably sit and fidgit with it some more based on everybody's suggestions. I really appreciate it, Rebels!
