GaToR -

Post by stratmonkee »

Started this one the other day, used my Gibson BFG "GATOR" model Les Paul for the guitars... another one that will have vocals eventually , just throwing it out here for fresh ears, was going for a little loose stones type guitar vibe ...all feedback much appreciated.

Good tone overall but the kick is dominating the mix in my headphones...rather louder and more forward than snare or bass.
Some sweet bass playing.
Nice piece could be some cool Glam era stompin' rock.
Cheers

Thanks Ray! Mixed this after laying down bass guitar tracks for a while..,.I think my ears where a little low end fatigued so overcompensated with the kick :>) will address next session ..

Sounds pretty good. I agree with the too much kick comment. I also think the guitars are a little fizzy, but not too bad. Cool riffing.

Thanks Greg, yeah just finished messing with this a little today and saw your post, hoping I tamed the kick a little , I did carve some hopefully fizzy freq's from guitar, I really wanted fuzzy and always end up with fizzy ! Here is song link is updated with new mix

I am coming in on the last mix offered up and it's pretty cool man. I can't say much about the kick as I think all soundcloud links are pointing to the same (new) track so i can't A/B. Itm ight be still a bit kick heavy a bit to my ears on my cans. Some rock and roll.

I can't tell if it is the soundcloud compression and whatever voodoo they put into their streams, or possibly some of your mastering plugins doing something weird, but there is something kind of strange and robotic going on with your punchy bits @2:10 to @2:21 It sounds really really loud and uneven with the rest of the mix.

Unlikely but not impossible, if you are using canned drums, maybe you have midi notes piled on top of midi notes making it seem loud. I only say that as one of the crashes in the punches seems to drop off gain wise more so than the other? that has gotten me a few times. If you are using EZD or something it is entirely possible that may be the cause. Might be worth looking into. Or it could be nothing more than soundcloud doing what it does. hard to say?

I thought the same as Greg. Kick a little strong. Guitars a little fizzy. Both very minor things. Overall I think it's excellent.

The bass tone is cool. The bass part is very cool. It really moves the song along. Gels with the guitar parts well.

Honestly I think that the kick is OK in level..it's just sitting there alone in the low frequencies. I'd try adding a bit more lows to the bass and see if that helps fill in the low end a bit. My sub isn't reacting to the bass at all, which tells me that there's little or nothing there below 80Hz, which is where my crossover is set.

Guitars sound great to me, bass tone is a little lean, drums sound good. Love the solo tones, and the wild wah solo.

Great start on a solid rocker, man!

80hz?! Damn how large are your monitors? I imagine 8 inches?

Kick doesn't seem too dominant to me.

I see what tadpui is saying about there not being much in the low end. The bass especially could probably use some boosting in the low frequencies; I'm noticing that a lot of it's lower notes are fading back into the mix.

Thanks to Whiskey Jack, TripleM, Tadpui, VomitHat Steve for the feedback....
So I found I had a couple of duplicate Kick/crash tracks accidently during those stops for the guitar solo, removed the duplicates which seems to have helped the sudden vol spike. Tried to EQ the guitars a little more to cut fizz...maybe the way I dialed it in on the initial pod patch causing it though :>/. I did work on the bass guitar tone as well and tried to fatten it up a bit... sounds much better now to me ..hopefully its not Bass guitar heavy though.
Thanks again you guys , really helps these rusty ears to get such great feedback. All the links play new mix

Bass seems a little more balanced in how much it sticks out in the mix now, yeah.

Edit: I think I just noticed a metronome poking through in the solo.

Good progress.
At 0.57 there's a hesitant spot in the bass track that a slide or cut of the one note may fix.
Still quite kick heavy in headphones - probably not the case on monitors.
Cheers

I think it sounds great. I compared it to the original post and it sounds the same to me. But the guitar sounds less fizzy than it did to me a couple of days ago. I'm guessing you replaced the first mix?

I'm jumping in on the last mix - I think the mix sounds great really. Only criticism I have is that I think the guitars sound a bit fizzy, possibly a bit too much gain and they're a bit too similar to eachother. Could you replace one of the guitars with a strat sound which only just starting to break up?

Yeah added a little eq girth to bass guitar, thanks for the suggestion...not sure what that is poking thru on solo as guitar was direct in thru pod...no mics, weird , maybe was my hand rubbing on string a little ?

JD01, was thinking of adding my strat to a track as I too hear the fizz, it was probably a little too much gain, will try that on my next session working on this, thanks for listening and commenting

Could be? It's right at 2:10, but it's just one "pock", so it could be any number of sounds.
