The Jongleurs Remix Project 13 - Tears and Mascara

Post by Armistice »

And here we are - the end game! Thanks to all who've participated so far. Seeing no-one had much to say about Gravity I thought I'd get this one up and done. Richard will come over for a beer next week so it'd be nice to have it all wrapped up by then.

Now is it my turn, or his turn? Both, as it turns out. His turn to sing, but I wrote the song. This is the only song on the album not sung by its author. He just wouldn't let me. It was a good call.

My whimsical epic, at almost 7 minutes long, featuring the Armistice Guitar Orchestra at the end, is I think the best song I've ever written. Like a couple of my other tunes, its actual name is often dispensed with and it's become affectionately known as "Panda Girl" - I got the concept from an ex-GF a long, long time ago who, having forgotten to take her (mascara-heavy) makeup off one evening, caught sight of herself in the mirror in the morning, was horrified, and said "Panda girl, unacceptable!" and promptly locked herself in the bathroom and cleaned her face. And much later I turned that idea into a song about gently teasing your (female) friend about her recent relationship break up, as a way of cheering her up. Fictional. I'd never dare do such a thing ... :lollers:

All of those guitar lines you'll hear at the end were played live, and repeated, via a looper, on an acoustic guitar going through a multi-effect pedal, so with a bit of distortion, echo etc. We'd watch people enter the room where there were just two guys with acoustic guitars and see them do a double take and wonder how just two guys with acoustic guitars could make all this glorious noise. I loved doing this song. R never really learned the middle 8, as it has weird chords, so I'd big it up with delay and he'd pretend to be playing something... :loller

I did it live earlier in the year, solo, with the looper, then at the end, had everything playing at once, put the guitar down, grabbed the mike and jumped down off the stage and sang from the audience - jeez that felt good. It gave everyone a surprise. I have it on vid somewhere.

Anyway - me on everything except the lead vocal which is R. Did the full drum replacement, sharpened the bass, lots of tidying up, pulled up a harmony line I omitted from the original. Made the (also replaced) piano more prominent, where it appears.

New version based on various bits of feedback:

This one seems to have a better spectrum spread in the new mix. The original mix isn't as warm as most of the rest of the album was, so the added clarity didn't translate into coldness.

new mix is also much louder!

There's even a line about saving the pandas in there that I hadn't noticed before.

We should swap tracks from panda songs and see what kind of mashup/remix shenanigans we can come up with.

Holy 3 Dimensional mixes batman!!!

Not sure why this mix seems to pop more from the original than all the other ones i listened to but this one really brimming with 3D aspects. Very good job Armi!

Armistice I should know the answer to all this but i have ot ask, is any of this new tracking? Or just a stright up remix of the original performances?

Straight remix. No retracking, apart from the drums - but I've learnt a lot about eq-ing and simplifying acoustic guitar tracks (I'd always use 2 mics and feel they both had to be there in the mix to get a decent sound but the reality was that the main mic needed to do the work - the secondary one was just clouding things, so I've often just killed it off) and also dealing with multiple electric guitars along the way, so I did quite a lot of mix work on this one along those lines.

Also sharpening up the bass - injecting more treble via various means has helped delineate that element better. These days I'd track it differently but it is what it is.

Also doing a lot of tidying up of vocals - editing out countless pre and post syllable noises, more sympathetic de-essing, tuning some of my BVs a little, shifting things a smidge where it needed to be done.

All this together would help it to pop more. I've been working on this one awhile because it's such a long song. And it's my personal favourite so I wanted it to be good. Glad it's apparently worked.

Thanks for the listen WJ.πŸ‘

Just getting to this now, Armi.
I know I always say this - more bass guitar!
Are the main rhythm guitars the same guitar, captured in the same way? The right guitar seems to have some very bright top end on it and really prominent string slides - could you try a subtle low pass to tame this a bit? If it sounds shit, don't worry about it 'cos its pretty good already.

Richard's vocal on this sounds great.

This is a great song though, mate.

Thanks JD

Yeah they're the same - same EQ as well, so I may have moved when I tracked the different takes. I've cut it down a little. Also gone to work on the bass - I feel the level is about OK, it's just not defined enough, which is a common problem with this stuff - nowadays, knowing what I do, I record bass differently, but back then I didn't, so I'm sort of stuck with trying to get more out of it. So I've buggered around with the EQ a bit more, and actually gone in at a note level and adjusted individual note volumes here and there so it should all be a bit more present. Sharpened up the kick a little too and rolled off the ultra lows, so that should all get the bass a bit more present.

I'll load a new version up top.

Sorry I'm late to this one. I went straight to mix #2. Very nice.

Vocal tone is perfect for the tune.

Bass is there, but not overpowering. Perfect for the mix.

Electric lead guit sounds excellent.

I don't hear anything I'd change.

No worries. I was waiting for you to drop by before calling this one done. Cheers! :like:

I'm still tinkering with this or that tune, bumping bass notes and levels up and down a smidge, fattening snares and the like. Hopefully I can call it done as a project soon.
