The Jongleurs Remix Project 9 - Time Is On My Mind

Post by Armistice »

His turn... only 4 to go after this one and I've already started working on the last of them. I sense I'm wearing everyone out. :lollers:

I didn't do much to this at all. There were a few songs where, by luck, persistence, or outside help, I got a decent drum sound. This one was the latter - I was really getting annoyed with it over at HR and Jimmy69 took pity on me and used Slate Trigger to get me a couple of useful snare sounds and a kick - as audio, obviously, so rather than fuck with all of that all over again, I've kept them. So it sounds a little different, drum wise, from the others.

RIchard on acoustic, vocals, me on acoustic, electric, bass, drum programming, backing vocals yada yada - the usual.

I've done the usual clearing up of mid range on the guitars, tidying up of vocals, and trying to give the bass a little more bite. What I didn't know about recording bass back then!

Like most of our stuff, it has several different moods. It went down well live.

I lied... various bits of people's feedback have been integrated. Thank you all..

Louder, "tidier" but I didn't mind the mid mud at all.
As much as I like this song the yeah yeah yeahs annoy me each time I hear it.

I don't think I'd ever rally listened to this one critically. That first "tiiiiime" always kind of grated on me, so I'd skip this one on most listens through.

Listening more carefully, I like the bass parts. New mix emphasizes those nicely.

Thanks ray. The ending section was just too muddy for my ears. People have been singing "yeah yeah yeah" in pop songs as long as there've been pop songs... don't let it get to you. He does even more of it in Peddler. There's about a hundred of them in that one.

It wouldn't be louder, I've been unwinding limiters if anything - I'm not taking responsibility for whatever CD Baby did to it to make the YouTube. :like:

Ha ha... we were a bit divided on that one ourselves, but it made it to the CD, so I'm stuck with it. Yeah, I got my groove on with the bass in this song, that's for sure - as much as I ever do, that is. :lollers: :like:

Not too much I would change.

I think the bass is just a bit low-end heavy. Not by much. But I think the mix would sound a little better if it were a little lighter.

The delay thing on the vocal at the beginning was cool. I'd end it just a little earlier. As you fade the guitar in, they kind of get tangled up in each other.

Pitchy vocal at :10 on the word "Time." I wonder if you could cut paste a good one in its place.

The guitar parts are cool.

Nice harmonies on this! Really like the song. The very first "tiiime" really jolted me but, other than that, I really enjoyed this!
If I knew what I was doing, I'd be dangerous!

Thanks. I think you're right on the low end. I was listening in the car and it was a bit boomy. I have a blocked ear at the moment, and not hearing too well, so I've just wound the HPF up a bit and am hoping for the best. I won't put up another mix.

Couldn't find the pitchy "Time" though - 0.10 is before the singing starts - so assuming a minute had dropped off I checked 1:10,2:10, 3:10 and 4:10 and no "time" there either - so not sure what you're referring to on that one.

I did shorten the delay on the initial "Time" at the start and you're right, it does sound better.

I was referring to :10. The word "Time" seemed sharp to me.

Having a casual listen, the mix and balance are terrific. I wouldn't mind a bit more ambiance on the lead vocal, it sounds a bit dry. Maybe a tiny bit more bass guitar too.

Thanks Lt. Bob and Tadpui

I'm actually not hugely fond of the snare myself, for reasons I can't quite put my finger on - it's "thicker" than the others, no doubt because of its origins, but at this stage I'm thinking, if I can not replace a set of drums, I will take that opportunity. And I was wondering if anyone else would have anything to say about it.

I rolled the HPF up on the bass to cut some of the woofiness TripleM was commenting on out, but then it disappeared a bit, so I've given it a bump - so given there's been several bits of new feedback, I have posted a new mix.

I'm listening to V2.
Love that huge cavernous verb/delay on the vocal in the intro.

Vocals sound brilliant on this.

Yeah - the snare isn't what you normally go for? What have you done differently with it?

You been catching up on your listening? 🙂 This was the original snare - and there's a story behind it - anyway, I'm close to finishing this project now and at the stage of running all the tracks together and hearing how they "work" in transition and I thought as I was listening last night, Lt. Bob is right - it's an awful snare. So I went through the exercise of replacing these drums completely last with SSD ones, but haven't bothered reposting it. Sounds much better... 👍

Yeah - I've been mostly working on podcast production and writing a few things recently, I've also not had much spare time so I've not been doing anything other than chatting shit in the Dew lounge.
