A Brief History of Canada Pt3: The Adventures of Cristobal Pt 2: Russian Bootleg The Blob

Post by vomitHatSteve »

Ironically, this is a much simpler arrangement than I normally do, but I'm trying to rush it, so it's kicking my ass.

Mix 1
AdventuresOfCristobalPt2.mp3
Mix 2
AdventuresOfCristobalPt2.mp3
Mix 3
AdventuresOfCristobalPt2.mp3
Mix 4
AdventuresOfCristobalPt2.mp3
Mix 5
AdventuresOfCristobalPt2.mp3
Mix 6
AdventuresOfCristobalPt2.mp3
Unmastered flac of whatever mix is most recent, which may or may not be listed above.
https://test.regdarandthefighters.com/t ... aster.flac

I feel like the guitars just aren't coming together. There's one on the left that's just grating away at me.
The vocals keep getting buried.
Regdar keeps on getting his glitch drums out of sync. (The test version of his drums is fine. I don't know why when I run real mixes, he keeps dropping half beats)
The Blob isn't in public domain, so I can't use it for a music video (f***ing Disney. Don't pay for Mulan)
The title of this song is objectively the worst title I've ever come up with, but all the lyrics in the chorus are russian words I can't even pronounce right, let alone spell.

I'm gonna keep plugging away at this all weekend, but if you spot something that I haven't yet, please let me know

Simpler means everything is more crucial or is irrelevant.
I like the mix...BIG bottom end.
The guitar on the left sounds right for its place i the mix..you could fuzz glitch it more but that's what the otehr glitchy stuff is for.
I Like It.

Thanks, Ray.

Honestly, I found myself turning the gain down on the left guitar for the first time ever. It was surreal! But before that all I could hear was buzzing. (I still kind of only hear buzzing)

Mix 2 is in the OP. It's not a mix change in any real way, but I think I have the timing problems sorted out

Mix 3 is incoming. Turns out that mix 2 had one of the percussion tracks muted for whatever reason.
Mix 3 also moves one of the guitars slightly closer to center and removes the phasey compression on all guits.

I went straight to mix #3.

It's sounding very good. There isn't much I'd change.

I'd nudge the lead vocal up just a bit.

I'd roll off just a bit of low end on the bass. I think it's just a little rumbly for a tune like this.

But that's it IMO. It's a cool song and a cool mix.

Mix 3....the bass guitar is really rumbling and the kick is just big soft fluff of low end. The lack of attack on the kick and bass conspire to make the low end a big mush. It's just too much IMO.

I do listen to all your songs BTW VHS - I just find myself at a bit of a loss with mix suggestions sometimes, as with this guy. 😲

I liked it though. You're definitely on your own planet. πŸ˜‰

Man I always like the contrast in your songs. I could use them in my classes to teach AB form.

I agree about the bottom end, but you already seem to be addressing that.

Mix 4 in the OP.

Kick and bass are both a little more mid-rangey.

Fixed some drum sequencing in the down chorus.

VHS jams are incredibly hard to navigate for critical listening and mix advice. Sometimes it's easy to just go with the painfully obvious if it exsits. Which is rare. VHS is his own brand and he 's got it down to a science so i just run with the obvious.

But in this case vomitHatSteve the bass is still rumbling around down there in the bottom but i can actually hear all the moving parts and pieces around it. Roughly. It eats the guitars a bit in the verses but i know there are guitars there.

An improvement on Mix 1 regardless. :like: :like:

Mix 5 in the OP.

Mostly bumped up the vox and turned the guitars and bass down a smidge. Slight tweaks to the bass tone too

I personally love this song. . can't really comment on the mix because I am such a novice (although I do agree with the statements on the bass) but, I really like the contrast you create in your songs, it makes me want to listen! So, I totally agree with musicturtle
If I knew what I was doing, I'd be dangerous!

Thanks, folks!

MT, if you want to use one of my songs in your class, you are more than welcome! Let me know if you need stems or anything.

The bass is still overwhelming to me but it's more manageable now. The kick and bass have enough separation that it's not too bad. I don't know how you did it but this one has some deeeeep bass frequencies happening.

I suspect the bass response in my monitors is not very good, so I turn it up pretty high.
Then my mastering chain turns them up more.

I also don't LPF pretty much anything.
