Another Nail in my Heart - Squeeze cover

Post by Bubba »

Another nail in my heart .mp3
I haven't done a full band-style song for a long-long time. As my songwriting mojo is also on the blink, I chose to do this song, which is a cover.

It has one of my favourite guitar solos of all time and I think the vocal suits my voice.

The drums are live, but aren't recorded as I would normally do them. My son Frank has moved out and doesn't have a ton of equipment over in Manchester. He recorded the drums with a pair of overheads only, no close mics at all. I dubbed the bass drum with a sample. I had to line up Every Single One with the overheads, because I had no way of triggering it but I'm fairly pleased with the results.

Armistice kindly consented to do the bass backing vocals for me as I can't get anywhere near those notes these days!

Thanks

edit: Mix 3 is the latest and I've tried to address all points. Thanks, everybody!

A favourite song from a favourite band and a bloody marvellous job of it too.
Well done David in doing the bass voice - the song can survive without it but, to me, it's a favourite part of the structure.
Cheers

That sounds like no fun at all!

Drums sound pretty good tho. I like the tom fills.

Vocal might be a little forward.

Armi's voice is pretty buried but complements yours well in the mix. Can hardly tell it's him doing it.

Thanks Steve, I agree with you about the vocal. I didn't want to be accused of attempting to bury it, ha ha. I've put a slight tweak in the OP

Sounded good.

I really like synth sound. Guitars sound good. Good vocal tone.

I thought the bass tone was a little cold/sterile. Like it had a big low end boost or low mid cut.

Tone on the guitar solo was really good.

I agree the lead vocal is a little bit out front.

Drum sound was very good.

I don't know the song and the associated distinctions in style/arrangement. That said, I'd like to hear more of the non-tremolo-y organ in the choruses and guitar solo; it sounds a little buried.
awesome youtube comment of the day
Bill and Ted time traveled and brought a bass player from 1973, a drummer from 1984 and a guitar player from 1995. Now they're spreading peace all over the world 🌎

Sounds pretty good to me - and this version of the solo sounds much more on point. Glad the bass vocal worked out OK - it sounded pretty average to me when I sent it. Sooo low. :lollers:

I'd turn it down a bit in the mix, but then, I would say that...

Nice work!

Nice job Bubba!

I agree with others that the vox could sit back a bit in the mix. Really good vocal performance though.

The keys during the verses don't sit great for my ear, maybe it is just a taste thing. I think I would like the sound to be a bit less square and somehow softened up a bit.

Fun song, don't know that I have heard this before so I looked it up. You have done it justice.

Thanks, musicturtle! I've lowered the vocal as requested. It's weird, but the organ in the original is a bit harsher, isn't it? Kind of overdriven

Thanks for your comments, TripleM. Regarding the bass tone, do you mean the intro? Because the main part of the song just sounds like a nicely-rounded bass, to me. I'm not sure what sterile means, in relation to bass tone. I think the intro might be a bit clanky - I suspect the bassplayer played the run further up the neck, on the A and E strings.

Ha ha,Thanks, Armi. Unfortunately for you, Chris Difford's bass octave backing vox are always very prominent in Squeeze songs! I think I actually have mixed them slightly down! No need to be concerned though, they sound bloody great, to me. And thanks for doing them. I didn't count the takes on the solo, but I suspect it was close to 50 in the end. There are just so many places to make a slight fluff and if you do then it's ruined. I really needed a compression pedal for the clean sustain, which is why the shreddy bit isn't quite as smooth as it might be. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

Your comment about the organ level was a really good call. The organ had indeed got lost from where it was supposed to be!

So thanks, everybody (so far). Mix3 is in the OP.

COOL! nice job bubbs.

I don't have any nits. At all from here. I gave mix3 a spin and A/B'd with the previous one too for kicks and i got nothing dude. Drums sound really good! I don't know the original at all and i don't think i will go listen to it either i like this one as is.

2nd Listen, i think i almost kind of want Armi's backing vox upped just a smidge. maybe. It might just be becasue i am on my cans. I'll have to give them a go over with the monitors.
