Psycho acoustics? Any tiny delay - artificial/FX or in performance timing - of two closely matched parts will result in the 1st being heard as louder - meters don't show it like that though & with my tinnitus added slight hearing loss on my left side means that sort of thing drives me spare when mixing.
I can't hear the issue in the latest mix.
Chris Squire - yeah - too busy & too toppy, (same problem with Rush), and his sound added to Jon's voice caused me to give them a swerve for life.
I've enjoyed this evolution of minor details and entrails.

All 3 solo guitars - intro, middle, outro - are panned dead centre and always have been - they're absolutely not panned to the right. They have a plug in dual delay added which, if anything would push left - but it's barely noticeable. So I can't hear that, and so I can't actually fix it...

TAKE BLOODY FIVE... :lollers:

Rockets.mp3

I'm exhausted.... :eep:
Bingo!! I think you've nailed the balance now. Another bonus is that the vocal at 1:46 that Ray pointed out isn't fighting with the guitar anymore. It's unfortunate that right at that moment you are kind of whispering and trying to fit in a flurry of words at the same time as the guitar does its own bit of embellishment.

Listening again, I didn't mean the solo guitar, just the guitar playing the melody line part as well as the chords. I mistakenly thought it was a second guitar!

Regarding the verse/chorus dynamic, I think the two guitars could even come back in a little more strongly than they do for the chorus, but that's more a decision for you and whether you want more of a dynamic contrast between the two sections.

I know I've given this a lot of attention but I think the song is great and worth getting right.

I think my quibble with the bass tone is minor enough to ignore. There is still some frequency in the 120hz area that I'd pull down. But I think it's really down to minor, personal preferences at this point.

Armistice wrote: Tue May 26, 2020 7:10 pm @vomitHatSteve I have dicked around with the snare a little - put a bit more bottom mic in it - it's mix of two samples as it is so I de-emphasised the thuddy one over the more realistic one. Also revisited some of the rolls and tweaked them a touch - I got what you mean there. And the oohs are me doing falsetto... quite shakily, but it sort of works. :lollers:
The oohs sound good. I think you nailed them.

I think the snare sounds better. I think more thud and less crack is what matches your style better. This one sounds like it has more tail on it too, which gives a good live, lower-fi tone.

Thanks all for your help - I may call it a day on this one now. Where to next...

Out of interest I popped it in the HR clinic - via dropbox link so it's the latest version. Crickets... which would be fine, I mean I hardly go there any more so why would anyone bother, but it's crickets for everyone really... the first 5 tunes in the list have a total of 11 responses. Still, one lives in hope... :eep:

Also, holy moley, their coronavirus thread is worth a read... :lollers:

miro just likes arguing. RFR is off the scale though. WhiskeyJack - consider "lapsing" his membership here, in case he comes back. :like:

And that's another observation, HR now seems to be choc full of old guys who just want to talk and argue - few of them have much to do with music any more.

The real tragedy with the HR mp3 clinic is that gonzo alone could keep it afloat. He posts new songs there several times a week, but I've never seen him respond to anyone else's songs. Rob Alestone was good about responding to almost everything there for a while two. If the two of them decided they wanted to, they could carry the dialog for everyone.
