The Starving Vegan Rescue Squad

Post by TripleM »

I did this one once before. Everything but the vocals are a retrack. I even replaced the real drums with fakes.

Mix#1

Mix #2

Lyrics (for anyone who cares)

The Starving Vegan Rescue Squad
Steven is a vegan
Pristine as he can be
And he can quote you any Dylan song
Ain't no use in leaving
He can take the whole evening
Telling you he's right - you're wrong
Then morning comes - another day he's gotta get through
But he gets dizzy every time he stands
Grabs a bowl of something that looks like glue
And he chokes it down the best he can
Yeah Peta's got his collar
He wants to show he cares
The flavor of the day today is water
So there...

CHORUS
If your neighborhood hippie's got his shorts in a wad
Call The Starving Vegan Rescue Squad
He's a little bit brainless, a little bit flawed
So back away from the tofu - ring up The Squad
Yeah back away from the tofu - ring up The Squad

Let's book out to campus
It's easy there to stamp us
Out some lefty hipster snobs
We're great big fans of vegans, we ain't no fan of Reagan's.
We're bohemians on the job
We drive around in vans
And we stick it to the man
We eat steak that's made from kelp
We got a vegan bonus plan
But the call center is slammed
So god please send some help
We mumble something about nutritional justice
From the front of the food stamp line
I'm planning to save the planet after I get mine

CHORUS
BRIDGE
I said these herbivores are my posse now
And at the time I thought that I actually meant it
But they tapped my emotional bank account
And when I look inside I see they already spent it

Everything sits well! Only small thing for me is that the vocals sound a liiiiitle bit muffled. Maybe add some high end to it?

Vegan food doesn't really need to cook as long, I'd have probably stuck a fork in it last version.

I'll check the new one out in a bit, but I suspect it's not really necessary

*edit*

Yeah, this version is cleaner. Honestly, I think I prefer the energy and burrs of the last version.

CrowsofFritz - thank you. I was going back and forth on the vocal between muffled and sibalent. So I know what you're saying. I'm too lazy to try to figure out how to use a multiband comp as a desser. Maybe I should take the time.

vomitHatSteve - the old version had a couple of spots where the timing was really loose. I just thought I had to fix that. I think this guitar tone is better. Thanks.

musicturtle - thank you for listening. Glad you liked it.

That's really cool & fun BUT in the intro the snare seems to be on the wrong beat.
Other than that the snare sounds about out of place sonically - like it's just a room mic or something.
Otherwise COOOL.
Lyrically it's good fun too.
Though "He's a little bit brainless, a little bit flawed" doesn't seem to have a clear reference - does the pronoun relate to the squad or the hippy?
Cheers

Nice work! This reminds me of something, not sure what. Dude this is so loud, I just got done mixing a song and listened to this right after and wow! Not in a bad way, mine is just quiet in comparison.

man i missed this Entirely TripleM

I don't really have any nits at all. It has a cool vibe. And i do not think i heard the last version though to truly A/B which might be better.

I do have a question though, why would you replace the real drums with fake drums? Timing issues?

rayc - I might play around with the snare in the intro. It's a straight forward backbeat right now. I might try to change it up. The little bit flawed refers to the hippie. Honestly I was just trying to find a decent line that rhymed with "Squad."

liv_rong thank you. It's fairly loud. I have the tracks pretty well compressed, and then I have two limiters on the main buss.

WhiskeyJack - thanks buddy. I replaced the drums because I didn't like the way the live ones played the intro. I can't find anything I like for the intro.

New mix at the top. Not a ton of changes. I changed the drum pattern in the intro - I stutter-step'd the snare.

I also tried to brighten the vocal just a bit, but I had to de-ess it. Probably not a lot of difference.

Minor changes buut effective.
I still can't sake the snare thing though. The guitar intro sets my expectation and that isn't met which is FINE though as it challenges me and makes me listen more closely.
It's a cool thing.

Thanks rayc . Not sure, but I might play around with the highhat. It's playing straight 8th notes through that section. And that might be too busy, given the stutter-snare. Other than that, I'm probably calling it done.

I think that this is a nice job all around. I'm not hearing a lot of bass on my system. It's there, but just so. As a stylistic choice, I think the mix could use just a little bit of ambiance somewhere. It's quite dry, but I figure that's a matter of preference.

Well done man, I think this is solid!

I really like the guitar tones you got for this. Fun song. Fucking vegans.

My only nit is your vocal range always sounds a little strained, like you don't explore finding the right key for your range. Not a big deal, I'm no singer myself, but that's how I hear it.

I appreciate your thoughts. Thank you.

Yeah fucking vegans. :) Within 5 minutes of meeting one, they'll have somehow informed you that, in fact, they're vegan. Like I care what you eat.

Seriously tho, thanks.

What's the joke? A vegan, an atheist, and a crossfitter walk into a bar. Which one tells you about it first?

My wife was on some group discussion last night on some platform and the topic became if it's "vegan" for a vegan woman to swallow a man's..you know. Naturally, it was a total shitshow. Most vegan women said "no way". Semen is not vegan friendly.

An interesting angle I would have never considered is consent. And more than one vegan lady brought this up, so it's probably something that's been discussed before in vegan world. Some of these vegans said consent is a big part of what makes makes something vegan or not. Animals do not consent to being killed and eaten, therefore they are obviously a hard no. But if a man says "yeah go ahead and swallow my jizz" then it's perfectly legal under vegan law to swallow.

Lol. Fucking vegans.

One conflict I've often had with veganism over vegetarianism, is that the former often seems much more obsessed with rules for rules' sake.

I have one vegan friend who said he probably wouldn't eat magic mushrooms because they usually grow on cow droppings. You have other vegans who won't eat honey despite modern beekeeping being quite humane and bees being so incredibly necessary to the entire food chain.

Of course, my hot take is that the most ethical diet is freeganism. It's far worse to allow an animal's death to go to waste by letting its meat be thrown out than to kill the animal in the first place!

Right to all of that. The honey thing is hilarious to me. Vegans won't eat fucking honey. A bee doesn't have to die to vomit up some honey. They just do it.

I'm good friends with a guy who doesn't eat meat. He'll eat a plate of bacon or chicken though if it means it's not getting thrown away. To him if the animal died for food, for whatever reason, it needs to be eaten. Wasting that animal's death is worse than the death itself. I'm totally fine with that logic.
