I Can't Sleep - remix mix check of an old one

Post by Greg_L »

Since I'm just sitting around doing nothing I'm revisiting some older stuff trying to organize all these songs that I've never done anything with for a new album. Or two. Maybe a triple!

This one's called "I Can't Sleep". Gimme a mix check. I think it's pretty good but I've listened to it too much.
I Can't Sleep1.mp3
I can't sleep and it's keeping me awake at night

I'm scared there's a monster under my bed
I'm scared that I'm gonna wake up dead
I'm scared that I can't pay all my bills
I'm scared that I took too many sleeping pills
I'm scared of getting killed by the boogeyman
I'm scared of laying under a ceiling fan
I'm scared that I'm gonna wet the bed
I'm scared that I'm gonna wake up dead

I can't sleep and it's keeping me awake at night

I'm scared of government conspiracies
I'm scared of aliens probing me
I'm scared of falling out of bed
I'm scared that I'm gonna hit my head
I'm scared of bugs crawling in my ears
I'm scared that I drank too many beers
I'm scared of having a bad dream
I'm scared that no one will hear me scream

Mix#2
I Can't Sleep2.mp3
De-essed vocals
Tamed tom boom a little
Slight boost and leveling of bass guitar
More organ
Tightened low end overall

I can never fucking sleep. Can't listen right now but I should have ample time between 1 and 6am.

Good lyrics though, Greg.

Thanks dude. It's an old organ. Belonged to my grandpa.

Sounds great man. Can't imagine I would change anything there.

That organ is a nice touch.

Sounds great.

The bass seems to drop in level at about :30. It's real heavy up till then, but it noticeably drops.

I can hear what MMM's referring to - though I hear it as not so much a drop in level but that the top end of the bass isn't as growly. Excellent song - MONSTER guitars and the organ is Fafisatastic.

Thanks dudes. The bass changes in that one spot just in the way it's played. I go from banging a single open/octave A into the descending pattern. It's also pretty distorted for a bass tone so it sort of mashes in with the guitars. I'm not too worried about that. That part of it sounds fine to me.

Beauty!!!! I was wondering when the next Graeg jam was going to make it's way onto the internerds. Lots of cool stuff happening that surprised me. the organ was cool as hell and that dead on stop on a dime ending does it for me. that is a thing i like. A thing i like a lot.

I am on my monitors and i think the esses on all your vocals could use a lil bit more taming. They come at the listener pretty hard, fast and like knives. It isn't so bad at a bit lower volume but at rock and roll level it's pronounced quite a bit on my end over hear. Same as on my cans i reckon.

Can't help but wonder if all your individual vocal layers are dessed to the best they can be and what sibillance is making it's way through is just a pile up of the sum of the parts? If you have all your vocals shipped off to a main folder or a main vocal bus could you stick one more layer of dessing on that as a final thing?

Very driving tune man. Love it.

Thanks dude. I don't think there is any de-essing going on. It's only a main vocal track and two backing vocal tracks. I guess they could be stacking up in the esses but it hadn't jumped out to me. I'll look into it. :coolstorybro:

Cool.

One minor nit: the bass is drowned out :12-:28 and similar sections -- the 4 bars prior to and through the repeated "I can't sleep and it's keeping me awake at night". (Of course, I realize that may have been an arrangement choice.)
awesome youtube comment of the day
Bill and Ted time traveled and brought a bass player from 1973, a drummer from 1984 and a guitar player from 1995. Now they're spreading peace all over the world 🌎

haha - Its a keeper! Excellent stuff Greg.
Mix is great. Only thing you could do is make the creepy keeyboard sound a bit louder or give it some sort of high bump so its a bit more piercing... like something from a 50s B Film.

Noice! I am excited for Greggor the Terror "Constitutional Scholar", the triple album!

It might be the different environment, but this seems a lot bassier than your normal mixes. Is that an intentional thing, or am I mishearing?

I like the buildup of guitar feedback in the choruses.

Thanks man. Is it bassy in a bad way?

I'm not sure if it's bassier or if it's intentional. It has a lot of "bass stuff" in it. Toms banging away sometimes and a pretty distorted bass tone compared to what I usually do. It is intentionally thick though. Or thiccc. I remember the original intent for this song years and years ago was to only have distorted bass guitars. No regular guitars. :lollers2:

No this is just as I left it. Remixed, but no new tracking.

Sounds great Greg.

I haven't heard one of your tracks in a while, so it was good to have that chance again. Super tight playing and a focused mix.

Personally, I'd like to hear that organ a little louder in the mix, but otherwise, I got nothin'.

Sounds great, man. I agree with the organ needing to come up a bit, and a little de-essing wouldn't hurt either.

Great song, love the guitar riff!
