New Track - Inversions
Here's something new that I started working on one night last week. Its called "Inversions" 'cos its based around a bunch of chord inversions

That's cool - except for the tin lid kick - the sound of flicking the inner foil seal on a tin of Milo.
The guitar on the right sounds really cool but is over shadowed by the almost as cool one on the left.
Bass - SOLID.
do you have a melody & lyrics as well?
I wanted that solo to keep going until the end.

Cheers, Ray. I'll have a listen about the kick.
Bass is captured in a slightly different way as suggested by bubba.
Aside from hi passes to stop the guitars building up there's no EQ yet.
No vocal melody or lyrics yet.

Re: New Track - Inversions
Ray, can you explain more what you're getting at with the kick. Sounds alright to me although I haven't listened in the car yet.
Re: New Track - Inversions
Sounds nice to me, I have no kick concerns. Guitars sounds really nice.
Re: New Track - Inversions
nice .... kick is maybe a bit clicky but that's a common kick sound and doesn't bother me in this clip.
I must mean something different than ya'll by the term 'solo' because I don't hear one.
There's is a guitar playing some single note drones near the end .... but not an actual solo anywhere
Regardless .... nice tunage ..... you gonna write lyrics for it?

Re: New Track - Inversions
I thought things sounded very nice.
I might give that lead guitar line that comes in at :26 a little nudge up.
I wonder what it would sound like if the clean guitars in the intro that were wide panned were double tracked tighter - like the exact same part. That might have a nice chimey feel. Then keep them as they are in the rest of the song.
But overall it was real good.

Yeah, it's not quite a solo, but I know what Ray meant... the bit at the end with all of the unison guitar parts followed by the lead bit with the guitar in the middle. I adlibbed that last lead bit, but I liked it.Lt. Bob wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 4:59 pm nice .... kick is maybe a bit clicky but that's a common kick sound and doesn't bother me in this clip.

I would like to add vocals to it... I don't particularly want to ruin it with my singing but I'm sure I will eventually.
Re: New Track - Inversions
Cheers, mate. I've actually intentionally kept the guitars playing different chord voicings throughout the whole thing until the very end.TripleM wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 5:09 pm I thought things sounded very nice.

Re: New Track - Inversions
I think the mix is good.
The longer it went, the more the bass line started to grate on me tho. It's kind of got that psychedelic-no-dynamics-play-as-many-notes-as-possible-all-the-time vibe to it.
The best part was around 3:15 when it went to more of a rhythm role. I think you'll definitely need vocals because as it is, the bass is the main melodic voice.

Cheers Steve. You're probably right about the bassline. That's what happens when you write something with no lyrical or melodic ideas. The bit before the end is my favourite bit.vomitHatSteve wrote: ↑Mon Apr 20, 2020 10:56 am I think the mix is good.

Re: New Track - Inversions
I'm not hearing what every one else is hearing if i am being honest.
I think the kick is totally fine as is and the bass also fine. Tonally the bass is very well controlled and far less transient laced as your other bass tracks have been but it could use a bit more depth and detail if i was going to nitpick it to death. But as is i think it sounds more than usable as a keeper track.
I don't even mind how all over the place the bass line is. It's cool. All the notes lock in on the drums and i don't really see much of a problem with it. I may feel differently when the vocals pop into place but i am sure it'll be fine. Good job JD!!!
That ending from about 3:20 though is even more awesome. Would be cool to maybe hear something with a bit more power behind it to really bring it life. Like get some overdrive on the bass and let it growl under all of that guitar stuff?

Obviously, how overwraught the bassline is is just a matter of taste.WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Mon Apr 20, 2020 1:33 pm I'm not hearing what every one else is hearing if i am being honest.![]()

Yeah.. maybe I could add some overdrive under that bit. Good idea.
Re: New Track - Inversions
I think you've got things sounding really good here.
Drums and bass sounded fine to me. I particularly liked how the panned guitar parts complimented each other, seeming to pick out different parts of the same lines/chords whatever...not totally distinct from one another, yet not in unison.
Plenty of room left for vocals or some other melodic element on top. Nice job.

Lots going on here JD - be very interested how it morphs into a song with words and melody, but equally I can see you pointing it towards being an interesting instrumental by adding more melodic elements in various spots - there's enough different stuff going on for it to work well in that way - it never gets boring because you never quite know what's going to happen next.
Sounding good.

Cheers Armi. I haven't decided what's gonna happen with it yet. It's the first song of my personal challenge to myself to write songs without palm muted powerchords.Armistice wrote: ↑Wed Apr 22, 2020 5:26 pm Lots going on here JD - be very interested how it morphs into a song with words and melody, but equally I can see you pointing it towards being an interesting instrumental by adding more melodic elements in various spots - there's enough different stuff going on for it to work well in that way - it never gets boring because you never quite know what's going to happen next.

This sounds great to me, JD. Kick is fine. The bass could growl a little more in the high mids for me, and your description of the bassline as "overwrought" is perfect for certain parts where it just goes unnecessarily all over the place. Rein it in mate!
It's crying out to be made into a song now.

Cool... I'll add a few more notes to the bassline so that it all sounds equally complicated.Bubba wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 7:47 am This sounds great to me, JD. Kick is fine. I'll try and keep it in my head to see if a vocal melody appears.
