Games None Can Play featuring vomitHatSteve & JD01
Hello Folks,
the track I recently posted with Misha on vocals has an alternate life now with VHS on vocals & JD01 playing the solo.
Steve did a few main vocal takes as well as a harmony track, (unison all the way I think), adding a more sombre tone as well as some very effective alternate phrasing to emphasise the themes.
James did a gonzo solo, (in terms of FX), that sat in the mix with no trouble at all.
The combination of the two has taken the song to an entirely different level.
I do need some commentary re the mix before it goes to the UK for mastering. I've tweaked the vocal based on the comments below - taken some bottom end from the harmony and popped a little bump at a little below 3khz on the main vocal to help it stand out. What change + or - do you h
ear?

Very interesting and cool sounding! I have trouble making out some of the words in the lead vocal. I don't think it's an issue of level, but maybe that some of the mid and mid/high frequencies of the lead vocal are masked by other parts. (It almost sounds like the background vocals are the ones doing the masking...)

Bill and Ted time traveled and brought a bass player from 1973, a drummer from 1984 and a guitar player from 1995. Now they're spreading peace all over the world

Ray - I don't think Steve is sitting in the mix that well.
His voice is normally pretty clear and you can pick out the lyrics pretty well - its a bit muffled here.
Bit too much double tracking maybe? where they're too close in volume and position in the mix? If you've compressed two together that aren't pretty much identical it will sound messy.

I like that you give me credit for "alternate phrasing to emphasize the themes" rather than "Misha's timing didn't match what's comfortable to me, so I changed it"
I can make out all the lyrics, but I'm probably overly familiar with them. With that bias established, I'm leery of bringing them out much more since that seems like it would clash with the shoe-gazey vibe of the rest of the song.
One thing that may be affecting their clarity is that the harmonies are much quieter than I usually mix. Not necessarily a bad thing, but a different artistic choice than I usually make.

I tend to like stuff that's not mixed to perfection.
This sounds like something from the late 60's to me ..... Quicksilver Messenger Service might have done something sounding like this.

SweetDan,
Thanks I've done a little EQing of the bvox - hope it makes a diff. I may have to do a little more and around the hi mids - I'll wait for comment.
JD01 ,
I've only used double track vox in the chorus and b vox. I'll look into them though.
vomitHatSteve,
I'll have a play with the harmony levels and let you tell me how I'm going - I'm in agreement with you regarding the overall level.

Thanks Lt.Bob: that'll do nicely!
New mix in OP.

Oh man i cant wait to get home and listen to these in a good place. Phone audio did it no justice really. The vocal difference between the two mixes on a phone in a hotel lobby was minimal bit the overall everything sounds awesome. Clear sparkly and crispy!
Will listen tonight when i get home!

Nice tune. The vocal sounds much better. The bass guitar is a little bloated with too much lows and not enough mids. The kick drum could use a bit more attack. Actually the whole drum kit could use a 1-2 db boost. The guitars are perfect the way they are.
Another toy that helped destroy the elder race of man..forget about your silly whim it doesn't fit the plan.
