@musicturtle - I used three takes and play them simultaneously which seems to help cancel out the pitchyness somewhat, where one is a tad too low, the others are higher. Anyway when played individually they don't sound too good.
@Tadpui I have two lead guitars which I select with envelopes to try and get the best track parts, nondestructive comping I guess you could call it. Anyway, I moved the envelopes somewhat so it sounds different.
@rayc Thanks for all your input, I can hear thing I never looked for. I'll have to experiment with EQ more too remove offending frequencies efficiently.
@JD01 Thanks for pointing me towards the "mud" I tend to get bogged down with the technicallities and plugins and don't pay enough attention to the acoustic details. I'm not using my ears enough.
I'm going to let it lie for a few days and see if I can get my Sampletank working again and give my ears a rest in the meatime.
Thanks again to all you guys, you've helped me enormously :not worthy:
Cheers

These mixes are all an order of magnitude improved over the first, which was pretty overblown and distorted.

Your noise floor on the vocals is much cleaner on the latest mix.

I'd probably take the rhythm instruments up a little relative to the lead ones (lead guit, vox), especially the drums. The drums are pretty buried right now.

I'm liking the progress you're making on this.

I've done some EQ-ing around the bottom end and deleted a guitar and changed the bass. With some BiaB tracks they supply a midi as well as a wav so you can change the instrument. I've used the BiaB drums instead of Jamstix. I'm not too familiar with Jamstix yet so I can't control it as well as I would like to. All in all I'm quite pleased how this has developed thanks to all the help from you guys :not worthy:

Chris,
the BIAB drums work pretty well but the cymbal is pretty loud in the drum mix - I struggle with that aspect often.
I ran your master through Reaper's EQ and found that a reduction of a few dBs at 3500 hz really tamed the cymbals without damage to the rest of the track - took the edge off. I used a relatively narrow Q factor. Doing similar to just the drum track would get better results and you'd be able to be more precise in placement, width, etc.
It's not essential but - perhaps for next time as you appear to have wrapped this one up.
Good result mate - lots of learning done.

Ray,
I listened for the cymbals and they are on the limits of my hearing range at 3500hz. It comes out more as a gentle hiss rather than the tinny shimmer it should be. Anyway I have reduced the 3500hz in the drum track and I think I can hear a difference.
I've attached the new file. Maybe i should delete some of the old files in the post, I don't want to clog up the forum with audio files. Is there any preference on this?

I'm yet to hear a complaint from WJ about us uploading too many files.

This jam has come along way CeeBee. I feel like the whole thing has a bit of a quilt sitting over it? IS that just an artifact of BiaB rayc ?

Um, CeeBee I am not to chuffed about too many wave files at this point. If it poses a problem i will give everyone plenty of heads up or just go in stealthily and start doing some clean up. No need to worry about it now unless you feel you want your older performances deleted from the history books.

WhiskeyJack I took ray's advice on the 3500hz but I put a wide Q by mistake which put a damper on everything. I've put a narrow Q just on the drums which should have taken the quilt off of it.

I can't imagine how I screwed that one up, and my ears didn't register it as well as they should have. It was WJ's comment on the quilt that made me go back and check.
I want to thank all who helped me on this :coolstorybro: much appreciated. In other forums there is little constructive mixing advice, (one in particular, probably as the average age seems to be over 70 so their hearing is no better than mine  ) it's either no comment or "great tune, a keeper". Then I go and play it in the car or through speakers and realise what a load of shit it is

No worries CeeBee - that's what this forum is for.
I've found that the BIAB mob, well a couple of them at any rate, have begun to accept my comments & suggestions a little better. NOT MUCH but a little.
I've decided to scoot by those to whom I would just be reiterating the same thing every time they post - they don't want help & I don't need to annoy myself. Partially it's due to the mixes I've posted there - thanks to paying attention to this RR mob - being close to what I try to preach and partially becasue I've gone to PM when there's an really good song going begging becasue of a couple of simple missed things. I'm still a blind man leading some blind folk like in The Day of the Triffids but I'm linked to eyes and ears over here so can get along a little better.
It's really nice when a mix improves isn't it. Not just the sound but the achievement and the learning on top of taking something to "completion".
Great to have you here CeeBee.
Cheers
