I think I've heard the whole WJ work in progress collection and there's a whole album of really good 90s style emo/punk there! I'm yet to hear a finished song in about 5 years of chatting to you though!WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Tue Mar 19, 2019 12:53 pm You and me both man. Lol. You guys are nuts. Just do it. Knock something out. You're overthinking it.
You get to to a point where you're not going to make it better. Just blast it out. Be confident and do it.

This wasn't one of my original choices, but with the passing of the late great Dick Dale, it follows the theme of the thread.
From Dick Dale in 1962....and Pulp Fiction in 1994....and Greg in 2019. My surfpunk version of Misirlou.

Searing guitar tone on that one! I assume that's the Mosrite clone? Love the hoots and hollers

Re: Recording challenge #2
Ha yeah. Thanks. The Hallmark Mosrite clone and my home-build Deluxe Reverb cranked till it can't go no more.

I may throw my hat in this ring...
awesome youtube comment of the day
Bill and Ted time traveled and brought a bass player from 1973, a drummer from 1984 and a guitar player from 1995. Now they're spreading peace all over the world

This sounds pretty fucking amazing, mate. Really enjoyed that (at home today so listening on a proper system). Your amp sounded like it was sweating a bit!
On the first listen through I kinda forgot it was you and I was expecting the trumpets to come in!
Re: Recording challenge #2
Thanks dudes. I almost used the Strat for it out of respect to Mr Dick Dale, cuz you know, I love Dick Dale.
But I hate Strats.

The trumpets...I really wanted to do something like that and give it the "full treatment", but once I got the bones of it down I just liked the way it sounded at it's most bare minimum. It's just one guitar track, one bass track, and drums. That's it. Oh, and the hoots and hollers. It's almost a mono mix.

That's a gooder man. Bang up job! Of the cuff, I was going to comment it needed a bit more verb and wondered why there wasn't more coming from you. but then i remembered, it is coming form you

Which reminds, liv_rong one of your 2 chord songs versions came up on my phone last night on the drive home and my wife really liked it. Good job. Again.

Nice work Greg. Great tone, great playing.
Re: Recording challenge #2
Thanks dude. The reverb is weird. I noticed it myself when I was playing it. I think...just speculating...that the loudness, speed of the riff, and close miking kind of mashed the reverb from the amp into submission. The reverb was actually pretty high on the amp but it seems like it never really had time to "present" itself or give any definition. It was in a constant state of "wtf is going on here?" And the amp truly had nothing left in it. It was maxed out. If I did slower single notes it'd be drowning in reverb. You can kind of hear it with the dumb slide thing I do at 2:27. The reverb is there, I think it just gets beaten up by the rest of the riff, which is pretty interesting to me.WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2019 12:54 pm

I agree with what tad said the sound you got is searing and i would say the same and toss in "chimey as fuck". It lends itself really nicely to crossover from your style to his. this is dope. I think i'm gonna DL and add it my phone lol.
Dick Dale, and most surf/rockabilly dudes back in the day, used standalone reverb units in front of the amp. I guess I'm gonna have to build me one of those things.
Thanks man.

Re: Recording challenge #2
I'd say you are right in all of that. i think it was just an onslaught that little amps reverb never saw coming HaHa! Shit you are also right i forgot entirely that he had a standalone thing.Greg_L wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2019 1:26 pm Thanks dude. The reverb is weird. I noticed it myself when I was playing it. I mean you could build one, but there are some decent pedals out there too. I have the little mini holy grail and i really like it and i'd like to get the big daddy Holy Grail. none of my amps have a reverb unit on it so it was an easy fix and semi convincing.

Re: Recording challenge #2
Yeah the difference is those tube reverbs in front are in the signal before it even gets to the amp. Like a pedal would be. On mine, the signal splits off inside the amp, gets the reverb, and gets blended back into the dry signal. The reverb signal runs in parallel. The massive compression from the amp being cranked just mashed it all together. That's my theory anyway.WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2019 1:44 pm I'd say you are right in all of that. i think it was just an onslaught that little amps reverb never saw coming HaHa! I have been kicking around the idea of building an old school Fender reverb unit. I think it'd be awesome....and pretty easy. It's like a small amp with the reverb tank being the speaker load.

I've been looking at kits. Weber has one for around $500.WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2019 2:08 pm it would be way cooler to have the handbuilt unit for the handbuilt amp.
They're about the size of a small amp head.
