I don't personally minernuggs but i have a two friends that i know for sure that have them and they are quite happy with them and have tried twisting my arm to get rid of my Rokkit5's and upgrade to HS8's.
Thanks Shan, I've read about the Yamaha monitors for years, & the folks that use 'em say they're great...I'm sure they'd be an improvement over what I'm using, but I'd still like to hear what others think of 'em...
My M-Audio BX8's have served me well (I bought 'em used for $140 a few years ago), but I think it's about time to upgrade my monitors...I got a Tascam 16x08 interface not too long ago, so better monitors are on the radar...

Sometime this week I'm buying a mint used pair of Yamaha HS8 monitor speakers. I'm really stoked to use them. I feel that the low end is one of the bits of my mixing that is falling behind the rest in terms of keeping it under control and balancing it correctly.
In order to do that, I guess I'm going to need to hear it properly.
So, if any British Rebels fancy some Yamaha HS5s, there will be a pair going spare very soon.
Bubba, after using the Yamaha HS8's for way over a year now, whaddya think of 'em??? I'm still using the M-Audio BX8's I've had for years, but I'm looking at possibly getting some better monitors...
I do have some treatment in my room, but I'll probably pick up some more Roxul to make some more panels & basstraps before long...Even though it's winter, I should be able to have a day or two here/there to slap 'em together...
Any of you guys that have experience with these monitors care to share your opinion of 'em???
I've had mine for well over a year and I love them. I think my mixes have improved drastically. I really need to hook up my old monitors so I can A/B but space is tight without major rearrangements.

I've had the Yamaha HS80M for 4 or 5 years now. They're the previous model from the HS8, and are very similar. I like them quite a bit, but I have nothing to compare them against. I bought these after using hi-fi speakers for many years, so they were a marked improvement from that. But as far as comparing them against any other studio monitor, I just don't have any frame of reference.
Oh and I did get some new music gear lately. I got the Superior Drummer 3 upgrade from SD2, and a JHS Muffuletta as well:

It does highlight what Greg was saying elsewhere - everyone's got such crazy names for their pedals you have zero chance of knowing their purpose just from the name.

Oh wait - "muff" in the name - fuzz or distortion, right...

Thanks Tad, I used a home stereo for a while myself, & the only monitors I've ever used are M-Audio (5" & 8"), so this is un-charted territory for me...I'm still on the fence about the Yamaha monitors, but it seems everyone who use/used 'em think they're good...

Awesome man, what do you think of SD3 compared to SD2??? I like it a lot, so much so that it's pretty much the only thing I use now...

I know what a muffaletta does - heartburn if you eat the whole thing.

It's an actual food thing as well then? I guess that's sort of obvious from the pedal pic now I look at it.
Nice score on the Muffeleta! To those who didn’t look it up yet, it’s got their version of a bunch of various Big Muff circuits. They also make a Bonsai that is a bunch of different TS circuits. Those pedals seem cool but I’d probably find one setting I like then always use that one lol. I’ve never been a huge fan of muffs but I think I’d get along with the OP version pretty well.
Oh yeah, I got some new headphones today, kind of a boring NGD. Picked up a pair of Direct Sound EX29’s. Will try them out tomorrow.

Yeah and I had to look at the pedal to even spell Muffuletta correctly!
It's 5 different Big Muff circuits from over the years all crammed into a single pedal. It's actually pretty cool and I think it sounds great. Everything from the mid scooped sound to searing mids.
I only learned that it was also a sandwich in the last uear, although I still have no idea what's actually on one
From what the net tells me it's basically a mutli layered meat slice filling - variations abound but they, generally, have a horizontal stripe thing happening when sliced for a cross section image. They look too big, too meaty and unappetizing for me.

Usually it's ham, salami, maybe some other salty cured meat, swiss, provolone, and most importantly, the olive spread, which is like this olive paste made with olives and celery and cucumbers and shit. And it has to be on proper muffaletta bread too which is like a big round light italian bread. Traditional muffalettas are huge. They're like almost a foot in diameter. People often by them in slices, like a piece of pie, or maybe a half muffaletta. You gotta be really hungry or a total glutton to eat a whole one by yourself.
It's a staple of New Orleans, but I personally can do without the olive spread, so I prefer a different New Orleans Sandwich - a good ol Po Boy.

This year I need to buy boring utilitarian stuff, cab clamp, mix stands, XLR cables. I might treat myself to a better vocal mix later on in the year.
I have to buy a new mouse... how boring is that! Will pick one up today and post pics later so you can all have mouse envy...

Hi, Miner.
I think they're great. They don't flatter the music and there is a good bottom end response. Some mixes can sound a little "hard" on them but they translate well. Loud, too - they're at their best as a medium-field monitor rather than a very near-field setup.

Thanks! So far I like it a lot. And I'll likely do exactly that: find one sound and leave it there for years. Eventually I'll gravitate to a different sound, hopefully. But it's kind of neat to have options.
Are Direct Sounds the "extreme isolation" brand? Mine have been buried in the basement for a while, alongside my poor neglected drum kit so I can't remember the actual brand name any more.
