Greg_L wrote: Fri Jun 08, 2018 3:00 pm I'm pretty sure the DSL uses a pentode/triode switch to cut power. It's not really halving the power, but it's disabling parts of the power tubes. A pentode tube has five working parts (pent) and switching them to triode cuts that down to three (tri). You're turning off the suppression grid and the screen grid of the pentode. The suppression grid keeps hot fiesty electrons from bouncing all over the place inside the tube, and the screen grid sort of funnels electrons straight to the plate. Both of these grids make the tube very efficient. Turning them off puts the tube in triode mode, which involves just the basic essentials - plate, control grid, cathode - and this makes the tube behave much less efficiently, therefore, less power.

JD's amp, since it apparently involves heat, must have some kind of mini-attenuator built in, or some kind of power scaling. Both create heat and both allow the power tubes to stay in pentode operation while cutting output power.
Wow dude, you've really got your brain wired to this stuff...Pretty impressive...

That's what the low power switch on the DSL100 is/was dude, exactly...

I'd say Jdude's H&K does a better job since the circuitry/technology is different than the DSL...The Mini Jubilee does pretty good in 5w mode, & I can't tell that much of a difference in the tone...There is a difference, but it's nothing like the DSL, which seemed to knock some of the high end off, which is caused by turning off parts of the tubes like you described...

Yeah, the whole top of the amp is like a hotplate in a curry house after a couple of hours.

Oh, cool. You're building a set from a 50's science fiction film.

My guess is testing circuits of some sort. Or correction of something. My uneducated guess is that.

Amp tweaks/mods/repairs. Tracing signal. It will work on anything, but I got it for amps.

This thing will let me see exactly where things are going wrong if there's a problem somewhere.....once I figure out how to use it. :sherlock:

The sine wav in the pic is a 1khz signal I injected off of my phone on to channel 1. Lol. The square wave is the probe calibration on channel two. Two channel scope.

I think that this device puts you one step closer to being a bona fide mad scientist. I'll start pricing Tesla coils and a Jacob's Ladder for your laboratory :D

Finally, after almost 3 years of you guys painfully listening to me whining & crying like a little kid...

I actually sold my Lester & the 15w EVH Shitbox to be able to fund it...

I'm about to pull the trigger on...

wait for it...

it's coming...

It's starting to trickle down my leg...

I'm about to jizz my pants just thinking about it...

another 50w Ceriatone Chupacabra!!! :minernuggs: :coolstorybro: :like:   :robus: :yeabuddy:
Image

I'm pretty fuckin' excited to say the least, I really regret selling the one I had, & every amp I've had since has been an attempt to replace that amp, but I just couldn't find anything else to fill it's shoes...

I made the decision to do whatever it took in order to get another one, so I put some of my gear on the chopping block to sell to fund it...That's basically the only way I was gonna get another one, unless there was a miracle, like me winning the lottery, which is pretty unlikely to happen, so I did what I had to do, & thankfully, it's actually gonna be a reality for me...

This has actually a been a major hurdle for me, & while it may seem small to you guys, it's actually a dream come true for me over here...

I haven't actually pulled the trigger yet, but I can say I have the funds finally, & it's basically a done-deal...It will take about 4 to 5 weeks to arrive, but this one will be a shiny, brand-fuckin'-new, hand-wired 50 watt Ceriatone Chupacabra built by Nik & his crew...

There was actually nothing wrong with the other one I had, other than it being fuckin' gone :smiles:, the only real difference other than it being brand new, is the "Pussy Trimmer" gain adjustment knob will already be on the back/outside of the chassis...The other one I had, I had to install/move the pot myself, because it was an older model, & the pot on the outside comes standard/stock on 'em now...

I can say, without a doubt in my simple little mind, this time around, the only way I'm gonna let that amp get out of my possession is for someone to pry it from my cold, dead hands, which I hope ain't anytime soon...

Party at Miner's place toward the end of July...No shirt, no shoes, no teeth??? No problem!!!
