Today's afternoon delight - Street Fighting Man

Post by Greg_L »

Been wanting to do this one for a long time because I like it and already know it so I made it one of my quicky in-one-afternoon projects today.

Rolling Stones - Street Fighting Man.

2nd mix with added hand percussion.

Nice. Just listening from my phone at work so no mix thoughts, but sounds pretty good from what I'm hearing.

Always liked this tune myself.

Ah,
The song where Mick decided he wanted to catch up to the world.
For a moment I thought it was RAMI - just the post title - as he's done a few Stones tracks.
I love this song & this cover is sneaky clever - the 1st guitar is pretty much a Stones guitar tone - then you add some more Marshallness to the guitars.
I like it, I found it hard to listen for issues/mix bits as I was busy enjoying m'self.
BUT.
There's a pick or string slide that stands out a bit too much at 0.47
Cool stuff.
I REALLY enjoyed the wah interlude/outro.
Cheers

Thanks fellas. It was just a fun afternoon project. When I have time I like to bang something out all at once and see if it can be good. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't!

This sounds great, Greg! I know you're probably completely happy with it but I'd like the guitars to be a bit louder when those power chords ring out - the guitar sound is great!

Is that the new mutant amp?

Guitars and pups?

Sounds excellent by the way.

The drums are a bit flubby in places but I'm on crap speakers right now.. maybe that.

Thanks dude. The left channel and lead is the mutant amp. I might go back in and touch some things up in the mix. This is the only mix I made and it was right after tracking drums and sitting in a room with amps blasting. I'm surprised it came out decent at all. I'm actually quite pleased with the vocals, which is rare for me. I never care much about vocals but this one came out pretty good I think. Triple-tracked.

Thanks mutt.

The right channel rhythm guitar is the G90 SG into a 100w Plexi
The left channel rhythm is the LP Traditional with Burstbucker3 into my bastard 50w Plexi/JCM 800 hybrid in 800 mode.
The center/lead guitar is my LP Custom w/ Bare Knuckles Riff Raff into the same bastard amp but in Plexi mode.
I kept the same mics on the same speakers (Senn421/Audix i5 + G12-65) for each track. I just swapped guitars and amps around.

I know the toms are intentionally boomy as shit. I can probably tame them a bit.

Good work man. The vocals did come out nicely, what mic do you use to record vocals normally? Also when you say triple tracked do you mean there are three tracks playing simultaneously?

As an aside, just the other night one of the Stones was dined at the restaurant where I work. Pretty cool.

Just listened to this again - very tight double tracking indeed!

Thanks. I used an AT2020 LDC for the vocals on this one. I got it free over 10 years ago and it's been my main vocal mic ever since.

And yeah, triple-tracked as in I sang it three times and every vocal track is layered and playing simultaneously. There's the main center track, and two others panned about 20% left and right a little under the main center track.

I know of the song, but haven't actually listened to the original, so no feedback on accuracy.

Sounds good as always.
The only nit that really jumps out to me is that the bass might be a little loud and mid-rangey. I like that rattle bass tone, but it might be too much in this mix. (Especially with 3 OD guitars also hanging out in the middle)

Thanks Steve. I kind of agree about the bass. I'm on the fence with it. I kind of like it, I kind of don't. It's a little nasty, but it doesn't really mask anything so I like that part of it.

Anyway, I added some crappy shakers and tambo. Tightened some of the boom out of the drums. New mix up top.

New mix - good fix.
The Cow Bell seems a little ashamed of itself at the beginning - as traditional - more cow bell on the intro.
Bass tone - works for me as it's not treading and it's a good point of difference from the original.

I have cowbell. Should I add it?

No, that was me being stupid. Maybe lift or silence the hihat ticks in the intro: their level is odd given the power of the toms.
I had another fun listen.

Ha well they were just lightly foot operated. The toms are full power arm bashed. :lollers2:

Hey this is really good. I like the way you've done it this time, a departure from your usual mixes. I really like the big, open toms, vocal sounds great and the big verb (as you know) is really my scene. The whole thing has a massive, in your face, exultant atmosphere. I like how the bass pokes out occasionally, a bit like in the Lemonheads' "Mrs Robinson". Ace.

Hey thanks a lot Bubba.

Unfortunately for me, I don't really know what I did different. :lollers2:
Besides the triple vocals, it's pretty much like everything else I ever do. This was just one of those that came together nicely really easy.

Tambo is a cool addition.

First listen. Sorry man.

This is really cool man On it's own. I am not overly familiar with the original but this as it's own thing is Gnarly.

The drums sound way bigger than how you usually have them. to my ears any way. The guitars sound mint as always. If i had anything at all that i would personally change would be dial the shaker back a little bit. When i have the tune cranked in here it kind of dominates the mix. I am not sure if it is integral in homage to the original or you just want your shakin skills heard up close or what but that would be all i would chnage really. :like: :like:
