Unsalted butter 4 lyfe!
I should really learn more about soldering irons. I have whatever $20 iron was available at Home Despot and whatever cheap solder they had.
I know so little about it that the only pain point I've noticed over the years is that it doesn't have a stand.

I usually use an iron that's way too big and gets way too hot, but I like it because my soldering skills are pretty good and I can handle it. I'd rather get a quick hot solder than sit there with an underpowered iron pumping unnecessary heat into whatever I'm working on.

That's the way to do it, for sure.Greg_L wrote: ↑Wed Jan 10, 2018 1:55 pm I usually use an iron that's way too big and gets way too hot, but I like it because my soldering skills are pretty good and I can handle it. and EVERYone that plays with electronics should be able to solder.
It's easy .... and useful.
Just practice a bit ....... I'm a bad ass solderer ..... I can solder teeny tiny things ..... most of ya'll will not have to solder tiny stuff.
Get a basic 30 watt iron and a bunch of smallish wires and practice a bit.
Rosin core solder only please.
Be sure to read a tutorial ..... have a damp sponge for wiping the iron and clamps of some kind to hold the wires still (ANY movement while cooling will cause a cold joint) and practice.
It won't take long ..... and you'd be surprised how handy it can be.
mom-in-law has a collection of those solar toys like dancing frogs and such and I've been able to fix those when they stop working and that's some TINY shit in there.
You'll be able to fix all sorts of stuff around the house.
IMO it's basic knowledge any musician should have just like every guitarist should know how to set up a guitar.

Considering resting tremor runs in my family and I drink too much coffee, that's probably a good thing.
