"Tagging" MP3s
"Tagging" MP3s
Assuming you do this, what do you guys use?
So I render an MP3 out of Reaper and the only thing attached to it is the file name - so I have to go in, using a program called MP3 Tag and put artist name, song name, year, album name, track no. etc. Bit of a pain if you're iterating a mix and have to keep retagging new versions.
Am I missing something in Reaper where it can do this itself? Or is there a better way?

Re: "Tagging" MP3s
No idea. I don't think it's relevant for the iterative process of working on mixes. But yeah, when you've got a few tracks to a standard you're happy with and want to release them then it's relevant. But then when you've got a group that are ready it's probably not too much hassle.
Re: "Tagging" MP3s
I don't like putting things up publicly without tagging them as mine - yes it can always be overwritten, but still...
Re: "Tagging" MP3s
I don't know how that's done with Reaper, but you can do it with dedicated "Mastering" softwware.Armistice wrote: ↑Mon May 15, 2017 3:11 am Assuming you do this, what do you guys use?

Re: "Tagging" MP3s
I tend to drop my wavs into audacity to normalize and then export to MP3 from there. It has all the metadata.
Re: "Tagging" MP3s
If you are still making new versions, why are you posting them?
I don't use Reaper, but all the other daws I use have a tab of something where you can put the Metadata as you render the file.

Re: "Tagging" MP3s
That's how I usually do it. I usually at least populate the artist, title, album, and genre (home recording). That way I can easily locate the MP3 in a media player library if I'm listening on another computer/device.WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Mon May 15, 2017 11:49 am Can't you just do it with right clicking and windows properties?
Re: "Tagging" MP3s
I'm never certain when I post a version whether it's the "last" version or not. And there's only ever one location online. I don't put up multiiples.
And this sort of function is exactly what I'm expecting in Reaper. Maybe it's there but I haven't seen it. Will look.
Re: "Tagging" MP3s
I was going to say "No, it's not all there" but I just had a look and maybe it is. Certainly hasn't always been. I'll try that next time, but still, it's something you should be able to do when you create the file.WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Mon May 15, 2017 11:49 am Can't you just do it with right clicking and windows properties?
Re: "Tagging" MP3s
This is cool, I had no idea you could do it that easily.WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Mon May 15, 2017 11:49 am Can't you just do it with right clicking and windows properties?
Re: "Tagging" MP3s
Same here with my DAW (Samplitude ProX)...when I go to render an MP3 file...I can add all kinds of "tags" to it. The option is right there in the render window.
It will hold all that info until I change it...so like if I'm doing a few revisions of a mix...I can just render the MP3 files and the info is added to them.
When I play them back in something like Windows Media Player...some (not all) of that is displayed as the mix plays.
I think if right click on the song name in WMP (in the playlist)...and select "properties"...it shows all the info for that song that I added.

Re: "Tagging" MP3s
Yea if you have a few tracks of the same artist and stuff it can make things quicker too. you can CTRL+ pick the files you want to populate with the same information (artist name, album name, year , date genere blah blah blah) fill all that out and then go and add song names and differences as needed on an individual basis.liv_rong wrote: ↑Tue May 16, 2017 6:48 pmThis is cool, I had no idea you could do it that easily.WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Mon May 15, 2017 11:49 am Can't you just do it with right clicking and windows properties?
That's typically how i do it. I am confident there are better ways, but this works.

Re: "Tagging" MP3s
It sure sounds easier than using MP3 tag, line by line...WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Tue May 16, 2017 9:38 pmYea if you have a few tracks of the same artist and stuff it can make things quicker too. you can CTRL+ pick the files you want to populate with the same information (artist name, album name, year , date genere blah blah blah) fill all that out and then go and add song names and differences as needed on an individual basis.

Re: "Tagging" MP3s
Does that actually imbed the info or does it just create a list that only Windows sees?WhiskeyJack wrote: ↑Mon May 15, 2017 11:49 am Can't you just do it with right clicking and windows properties?

to answer your question, i believe it does embed it yes. I'll add tags to my reference mixes or random stuff i export out of reaper and transfer it all to my phone to be played back in the jeep or where ever, and all the info i entered shows up on the media display of the car or whatever media player i play it in, phone, home stereo etc.
Another great piece of software i found is called media monkey and it is pretty powerful in terms of managing that sort of stuff. You can also easily embed a custom image in each song as well. I've only since discovered this.
