SPLATY FUZZ

Post by rayc »

Hello Folks,
I'm recording a garagey track and I want a splatty fuzz tone for a section. I have a fuzz pedal but it's the smoother Big Muff style thing. Is there any thing I can do to make it splatty? Put distortion or a boost before it etc.? Even a free VST combo would do.
This is what it sounds like at the moment but I want so splatt so I can drop one of the current fuzzy guitars out to clean up the mud.
It's only ITB stuff at present - working out the arrangement before getting loud.
BIAB drums and organ, (couldn't find a Farfisa VSTi so used a Hammond, bumped it up two octaves and added some overdrive), Mustang into Big Fluff into Vox in a Box for the guitars and Bass DI'd then messed up...I'll have to rework the bass as its transients sound like a guitar strum.

I’ll have to look up what a splatter fuzz is later on. I always notice you like your vocals hiding in the mix, Ray. Why? They’re good and deserve to be upfront.

Aaron,
that's not me, nor is it my song. A fellow named David Lekich asked me to help arrange & play on his song. Initially it had a Brit Invasion vibe but I moved it to Seattle in the 60s.

Ahh, regardless they need up. I’ll look up Splaty Fuzz tomorrow.I think overall the tones sound great, though.

maybe try using a battery that's going dead for a low voltage?

This ^^^^^

Some fuzzes integrate a "glitch" kind of sound but a dying battery/undervoltage is the best way.

Thanks folks.
I had hoped there was some other way but flattish battery seems the go - I note JHS has a pedal to imitate a flat battery but that's a step too far & far too expensive.

I quite like this Ray. I'm also after a Fuzz, but I want a big muffy style fuzz.

If you don't have a flattish battery kicking around, you might snag one of these adjustable voltage adapters:

I keep a few around at all times to throw into circuit bend projects.

This sounds good!

As for pedals, fuzz is one of those things that sounds rad when others use it but I cant use it right or something. The only time I loved one myself was when I had an EarthQuaker Devices Black Ash but I sold it, regret it and now they are an insane amount of money.

As for that dying battery sound, Saturn Works makes one for like half of what the JHS one cost.

Same. I often like fuzz when others do it. I hate it every time when I do it.
