Patience Is A Vice

Post by JD01 »

I sometimes get annoyed with my lovely, but very religious, mother in law telling me that patience is a virtue... and then I started reading Albert Camus.

First time I've written a song in ages that I actually like, is the style of music that I actually like listening to - keep it simple instead of adding layers of more and more guitar, arpeggios and keyboards.

Good to hear a new one from you!

On a first listen, I think the drums are too dry, especially the hats. They sound very close and on top of the mix

Loud lip smack at 1:22

Guit and bass tones are good.

Cheers - Bubba mentioned my dry drums on something else me and him did recently too.

That lip smack is loud - didn't notice it at all until you pointed it out.

Maybe you could bury the vocals a little more?

That was a joke. Bring them way the fuck up.

Just went upstairs and checked the bookshelf... :lollers: That's a 1977 edition and I probably bought it new. I've read it, but probably only once way back when. Sounds like I should keep it that way...

Tune sounds good to me - I'm not worrying about drum dryness in particular and everything else seems to be in place. Good tune. Grows on you. :like:

Nice to see you back on the wheel...

I think I need to EQ them better too, they've been up and down loads

Cheers, given how limited my time is I'm going to carry on trying to write simpler song structures and shorter songs... but try and use unusual chord sequences like this.

Nice @JD01

I like the tune. Good to here something new from you.

I agree with Greg about the vocals, they need to come up.

The whole song is a little dry for me, but I think that is just personal taste.

Also not crazy about the cymbal sound.

I love the feedbacky guitar solo that keeps up in the background.

Your singing has also gotten much better over the years.

Cheers Tony. Cos the chord progression is a bit unusual, the guitar solo was always gonna be a strange one.

When I get chance to remix this I'll definitely look at giving the whole thing more space.

Another +1 for bringing up the vocals. (The hardest part as we all hate to hear our own voices)

Everything else sounds pretty good to me, hihat a little too loud maybe? I don't think the cymbals are too bad, just a little harsh sounding.

A good basis to work off though. :coolstorybro:

The 1st thing that struck me was the darkness of the wide panned guitars in the intro.
Not saying it's g or b just noticeable.
I hadn't realized how much I missed your lead playing...it's always you & interesting.
I like the song and, yes, the vocals...plopping AirWindows' Iron Oxide on the vox would address that with it's novel eq peak.
Cheers

Speak for yourself. I love to hear my own voice!

I just refuse to deliver my vocals in such way that starting or trailing consonants make it through!

Hey JD, Finally getting to this. Very cool to hear something new from you. Been a good long while. I think it is an entirely solid track. It stands on it's own for sure. The feedback bits are pretty awesome. Lends a bit of rawness to your other wise mechanically precise playing. Quite like that. Not a thing wrong with your guit sounds or agrrangements.

Vocals need to come up dude. My general rule of thumb is to get the vocals sitting round about the same Db and space as a guitar solo. Use that as a guide and then finesse them into their own space after that.

Drums are weird because i kind of hear them both as being just right and then at times the snare is a little dry. I wouldn't rethink it all though. That is just someone actively listening ot find nits and warts. I don't think a listener is going ot give a shit at all.

Lol @ religious mother in laws. Relatable.

Cool song @JD01, very proggy sounding. I agree about the vocals but conversely I think the high hat needs to come down, it seems too forward for me, it louder than the crashes. If it were me, Id mess around with some different sounds. Cool job programming those btw!

I dont think anything has to be in any specific time signature to be anything. Plenty of pop songs in odd time sigs that are not prog. Point is, this song has a proggy vibe to me is all and also a fine song sir :not worthy:
