JAZZ? Well swingish perhaps.
JAZZ? Well swingish perhaps.
I wrote a song...had progression, rough melody & lyrics sorted.
Here's the finished "rock" version...
AND here is the finished "jazz" version...
I heard it as a 100 bpm vaguely rocky thing but the vocalist heard it as jazzier.
To accommodate her I'm trying to build a jazzier backing.
The rock version is played by me but for the organ & drums while the jazzier is all BIAB

Niceeee. Is that horn a sampler? Sounds very real.
“Naaaaaaaaaah man. I ain’t touching that mic. That thing’s expensive!”
Re: JAZZ? Well swingish perhaps.
Actual recordings of horns - ranging from one to eight bars in length and assembled by the program.

Jesus fuck. Get rid of the vegas lounge music. Keep your original.
Kick is weird on it though. Sounds totally disconnected to the rest of the music.

Re: JAZZ? Well swingish perhaps.

I hear what JD's saying about the kick on the rock version. It really is popping out.
Re: JAZZ? Well swingish perhaps.
The rock kick...it's half way through being tweaked...I stopped bothering because of the desire for lounge wear.
There's a diff in taste between me & she.

She sounds a bit like a slightly lower pitch Debbie Harry. I think the song would suit a jazzier arrangement, but I don't think the BIAB special is quite it... and you'd need to chuck in a few jazzier chords for it to work at all.
For reasons unknown, I get BIAB ads in my facebook feed quite regularly now.

Re: JAZZ? Well swingish perhaps.
Despite being written by a jazz player the program stealthily simplifies chord - I mean it does do a pop up to say it's doing it but in the bottom right corner and translucent.Armistice wrote: ↑Mon Apr 25, 2022 7:02 pm She sounds a bit like a slightly lower pitch Debbie Harry. Chord wise it's A, Am, Bm, C#m D E & Em F# and G# - def non jazz. I can pull up a jazzier piano BUT it doesn't support the melody well - even now it's a bit off and hence buried.
The singer is 64. She took my minimalist melody, (the beginning and end lines in both chorus n verse with a lot of faff in between), to a more melodic level.
I will experiment with jazzier voicings...I stuck with chords I could easily play when writing it.
Oddly I don't get any BIAB ads - probably becasue I'm not a target for future custom.

Re: JAZZ? Well swingish perhaps.
Of the two, I like the rock style better. But the sound quality of the lounge version, I thought, was better.
The brushes in the lounge version are too loud IMO. I thought the reverb on its vocal sounded good, but it was a bit too heavy. Those vocals are really clear.
The low end of the rock version is dominated by the kick. The bass is really tough to hear sometimes. A couple of minor pitch issues.

@rayc You probably already know this, but you can jazz up or jazz down chords in BiaB.
Edit/Chords (w)/'Jazz Up' the chords...
I prefer the rock version as well, it's a nice contrast to her sweet sugary drawl.

I guess I’m the odd one out in liking the jazz version more. I love jazz.

Though I must say, that vocal recording sounds like it was recorded in a literal echo chamber. Don’t know how I feel about it because the rest of the song doesn’t have that reverberation.

Re: JAZZ? Well swingish perhaps.
That's delay on the vocal chorus, (excessive I agree), otherwise the reverb is bused for the other instruments.CrowsofFritz wrote: ↑Wed Apr 27, 2022 8:24 am Though I must say, that vocal recording sounds like it was recorded in a literal echo chamber. Re: JAZZ? Well swingish perhaps.
Very much prefer the "rock" version. I too get a sultry Debra Harry/Blondie vibe, very cool!
Re: JAZZ? Well swingish perhaps.
Listening to the finished rock version Ray, sounds good this - I can't remember what I was listening to before when I mentioned the weird kick, but this fits in really nicely. She's a good singer this one - sounds like she's actually a singer rather than just someone who can sing a bit!

I think the "jazz" version is better. Her voice suits it better. It's just a better total package.
The "rock" version 1) doesn't really rock at all, and 2) the melody is strange and meandering.

Thanks gents, "rock" was better that "the other version" but it certainly doesn't kick along.
As to the "rock" vocal, I'm not sure why she wanted to do a different one for it but there ya go she wanted to. I had mixed it with the original vocal & quite liked it.
