Nowhere Man - New Mix

Post by musicturtle »

Did myself a Beatles cover

Pretty much the first rough mix.

Gonna redo some of the vocals as they are pitchy in spots.

Looking for feedback on the mix and guitar/bass sounds.

Thanks

Cool...the lead guitar is a bit loud/bright each time it comes in.
Bass has Hofner's thuddy muddy sound.
Good job...I look forward to the vocal tweaks.

Thanks Ray.

Actually a total redo on the vocals is necessary now that I have listened today again. Oy... I am just flat out missing some pitches.

it's a W.I.P. Tony, no probs. You'll nail it - it's what you do.

Sounds pretty good.

I'm hearing a bit of distortion on the vocal sibilants. Is that during tracking or mixing?

I'd probably bring the guits up a little. They're a little lost.

Thanks,

I was playing around with Black Rooster's tape emulation plug in. That is probably where the distortion is coming from.

I can do the harmonies if you want! My dad and I did a nowhere man cover many moons ago and it remains one of the best Beatles covers I did with him. I think the lead Vox is too loud in relation to the other two vocal tracks. They should all be fairly even.

Also GREAT guitar sounds. Both acoustic and electric.

Thanks @CrowsofFritz...I know you are a Beatle head as well.

I am gonna try to get the harmonies down myself, I see it as a challenge and learning experience. If it becomes too much like work I may take you up on the offer though :)

I like the acoustic guitar sounds.

The mix is a little narrrow. I might bring up the acoustic guitars and BGVs - things that are on the sides - to widen things.

The bass is a little rumbly and undefined. Maybe retrack with a little more treble and a little less low end?

Yeah some pitch problems. The vocals are also dryer than the instruments. The vocal tone is real nice. Retrack the vocals and put another mix up.

I'm not familiar with the original so can't comment on the arrangement.

I think the vocal is fine, don't need to worry about pitchiness - its fine.
It is quite bright (almost distorted) and the lead is very dry though! Right on my nose!
The lead guitar seems pretty loud and has way more reverb than the other guitars too.

Which is the new mix? Top or bottom one?

The vocals are blending together much better. I think George’s part could come up a tad. Just 2 or 3 dB, but it’s good!

Vocals sound ace now! Don't have that grating "on my nose" feeling.
The bass has "that" sound, but its now a bit boomy/resonant.
The mix now feels like its pumping a bit, but I think that's down to the bass.

You need to do something about that bass, I'd start by hi-passing it, quite low down, see if that improves things, might also bring your kick-drum back into the mix a bit more as its currently getting crowded out.

Agree. There's a huge suck of volume from the vocals when the bass first comes in.
It's not dissimilar from the technique of a lot of dance music where the kick drum ducks the entire mix hard and you get this intense pulsing on the 1/4 notes

Excellent vocals!! Great cover!

I did notice that when the instruments came in the beginning, the vocals suddenly sounded more muffled, they lost their "shine". Other than that, awesome cover!
If I knew what I was doing, I'd be dangerous!
