No Strings On Me

Post by stratmonkee »

Working on this one for a while now, struggling with trying to sing the lyrics I want to use for this, so, ended up doing it as I king of spoken word thing with the chorus being more "singing" , anyway its pretty weird, but thats how I like em :lollers:

Lyrics:
NO STRINGS ON ME

Brand new reality
Form of complacency
Edit the story
Increase the banality

We need the conformity
To Feed insecurity
Easier than seeing
What's real in front of me

chorus:
Woke generation
Watch out for Karen
Let us show you
The virtue of caring

Fear and paranoia
Sure to destroy ya
Put on your tin hat
And dance the bossa nova

can't have discussion
can't have debate
How would we ever
Keep growing this hate

Divide and conquer
Sow mistrust
Live and live
Has turned to dust

Chorus

So Get In Line
Let The dance begin
Hold out your arms
And put on your strings! 2x

Dance!
Guitar solo

Wish I had the answer
Wish I understood the question
Wish I was strong enough
To Buck the trend

So Get In Line
Let The dance begin
Hold out your arms
And Put On Your Strings! 2x

This is an ear-buds listen...

Very cool soundscape. I'd be curious on what it's "supposed" to sound like. But the spoken word stuff works pretty well to me.

I like the bass tone. Works well in this mix.

The cymbals are really strident. A bit abrasive and hissy. Snare sound is cool and works well. Kick sound is cool too.

Maybe notch out the guitar solo in the 2400hz range? Guitars can often get nasty in that region.

Vocals get a bit harsh. Maybe notch them out in the 5Kh range. Or if you have a de-esser, that might help too.

I'm only pointing out bad things, sorry. It's a cool sound.

It's an ear-bud listen. I'll try to listen on monitors later.

COOL...the sibilance is, seemingly, parallel to the aggro cymbal freqs... they need taming.
Good bass tone - growly.
Nice one Gene.

Hey TripleM, my initial attempt at a more melodic vocal just didn't fit at all. I'm very limited vocal wise  . Have not done much eq work on any of this so I really appreciate your comments, going to use your suggestions as I work on this today. It's just awesome to get feedback and ideas from other sets of ears on this stuff, hopefully it is helping me improve on my recordings.

Cool, I seem to really be having a issue with that, Im hoping all those years standing next to giant china crash cymbals and Marshall stacks in my bands haven't finally started showing signs of hearing damage :>(
Will have a EQ session today on this song see if I can tame some of that

The vocal is very sibilant. There's also this weird effect, on some of the plosives it feels like just the kick being pulled off to one side. That's not a criticism - just a bit of weirdness. I really like the kick sound.

Like the guitar solo! It sounds good and really suits the piece.

The vocals are surprisingly clear for how affected they are. Did you want them fully decipherable?

I like the low-fi drum tone, but I could see taking a little harshness of the hats.
Bass tone is cool.

generation/karen/caring is a pretty weak rhyme set.

I really like the bass tone a lot ..... cool tunage ..... I like it and the 'spoken word' style works well for this.

Listening on my regular system.

The only thing I'd add to what I originally said would be maybe raise the kick level? Or a give it a low end boost? A bit low end would work well I think.

It's a really cool song.

Did you hire Les Claypool to sit in on this? :D

Cool jam man. I think the spoken word thing works. I wouldn't change that ingredient at all. It's really treated and i think maybe some of the effects are piling up on plosives and the initial sibilance. I feel like it might be worth trying to find those and clean them up a bit.

Cool jam man.

Yeah all my recent recordings are having all kinds of issues with the vocals...I think maybe its just me  :lollers2: my voice has a built-in natural boost at 7k....I have tried all kinds of eq attempts on it and I just can't seem to tame it. The link at the top plays my newest and probably last attempt at a mix on this. Thanks for the listen and the good word on the guitar solo, that was fun to play for sure!

Thanks VHS, yes I would like them decipherable if possible, my delivery may be causing issues I suppose? Hahaha yeah that Karen caring thing is pretty weak, been trying to work on my writing, ongoing process for me . I did try and tame the hi hats a bit in my new/last mix. Thanks for listening!

Hey TripleM , took your advice on both your post , tried to eq the cymbals and lead guitar, also raised the kick a bit and the over all low end. The original post plays the new mix. Thanks as always !

Big fan of all things Claypool, so cool you get that vibe! As far as vocals, I recorded one mono take, then copied it to 2 other tracks, for a total of three tracks of vocals. 2 of them are panned maybe 20% left and right respectively, both with the same eq, a bit of a wide Q notch at 7500k, which seemed to tame the sss a bit. the 3rd track has same EQ, and also a weird delay plug in called "hearing voices" all 3 tracks have a bit of compression on them as well. Thanks for you listen and feedback!

Here is another link for the song iif you dont want to go back to OP

I'll have to check ..... I didn't even know he played on the Steve Miller albums and I'm a big fan of those.
Boz played on those early Steve Miller albums ..... and those were the best Steve Miller ...... after The Joker I didn't like his output much but pre-Joker, he did some amazing stuff.
