musicturtle wrote: Tue Jan 25, 2022 8:22 pm For what it is worth, I don't even punch in with a DAW. I just make a new track(you now have a plenty) and start recording a bit before I want to "punch in." Then just cut and paste the tracks together.
Nice! I'll definitely do that! ... :like:
I think you will find that the punch in and out i linked you to in reaper a lot easier that this method and much less editing. NO need for copying and pasting. it just defaults to the last good take during playback and does all the editing and take quilting for you. No fuss no Muss. And you can also demo previous takes with a click of a mouse and then click back to the last good take and really scrutinize your work with out having to jockey lanes and mute stuff.

Also @musicturtle does your daw MUST have the same functionality? It is such a rudimentary and fundamental tool to have it has to exist?

@WhiskeyJack yeah, obviously Cubase has that function and also a lanes feature that shows all of your takes and you can choose the one you like best. I should probably use it, but for some reason I have developed this workflow and it works for me.

I'ma gettin' into this in depth in another week or maybe two.

I have a private party next week I have to work up maybe 20 songs for and then shortly after I have a scope coming up so I have little time to do anything ... also have to set up a large articulating arm for my 32" monitor soI can move it where I want or even all the way out of the way ..... and then it's time to master Reaper.

I appreciate the help ya'll ....... I'm in good hands!

I use Reaper and I MUCH prefer to O.D. on a new track.
In fact I did it yesterday adding a "fade out" guitar part. fluffed the timing on the last note. New track recorded the note, double checked, sliced n diced into place.
Cheers

I've actually done both
For solos I tend to prefer a single cut but for rhythms I'll overdub in a second ...... I've used the do it on more than one track and comp 'em but I've also punched in .... but I was always working with 16 tracks so I would have to ping things down to free up tracks ..... but now no limits so I'll likely use the multiple track method when I need to.

I actually can usually get a single continuous track but sometimes something will be hard

I suspect I avoid punch in ODs becasue it was always a hassle in the four track cassette days...I mean it was relatively easy but remembering to kick the punch in button on the foot switch etc. was an added level of stress. Since I don't need to I don't.

Well ....one of the things I'm looking forward to is automation ..... I have a control surface so I'll be able to ride the faders ( to me preferable to comps ) and save that .... freakin awesome .... and then move ton 8 other tracks ..... can't wait

Control surfaces, when they work, are fabulous.
Mine does okay but can't cope with anything that's already automated...mind you it isn't purpose built.
You'll have fun.

I have a Presonus faderport 8 ...... I have seen some people say they've had a hard time getting it to work but Presonus has "set up for Reaper" instructions so I think I'll be ok ..... haven't hooked it up yet .... want to get a bit more familiar navigating Reaper before I try adding hardware.

Right now I need to rig up some warmth for the ferals since we're having a freeze next couple of days and then I'm gonna get my monitor arm dealt with.

Gigs cancelled this weekend so I have some extra time

I just got a Mackie MCU control surface and I’m loving it. It’s awesome. Did have a bit of a cringe and weird conversation with some dude on Discord about it though. He said control surfaces are useless and that he could make a better mix in one hour without one than I can in 10 with one. He has a Grammy nom, but I don’t care if you’re Geoff Emerick; that’s a weird and cringe thing to say. Everyone proceeded to make fun of that line.
“Naaaaaaaaaah man. I ain’t touching that mic. That thing’s expensive!”

well, what he really means is that he can do better with a mouse ...... so I suppose that's true for him ..,....... but like most people he makes the mistake of thinking what works best for him is what'll be best for everyone and is, in fact, the best way.
He would be wrong and a grammy nom doesn't impress me.

Different strokes and all that .... for me 50 years of using faders has made that a very intuitive thing for me. I don't really think about it, it's more like playing a musical instrument.
But rules are stupid .... no way the fact that faders are better for me means that everyone else should use my method ...... I find people that claim there's only one right way to do something laughable ..... there's a lotta different ways to accomplish the same end result.

Whatever you got used to is what's gonna work best for you .............. I've heard enough to tell that I have zero interest in Discord ...... it wouldn't be long before I pointed out someone is full of crap.

This. And what I’ve been noticing since recording other people is that I’m pressing the mute and solo buttons a lot. That’s just better for me to press four at once rather than *click, click, click, click, click, click, click*

Plus actual faders and pots are more fun to use. And it looks cool.
