Recording Challenge #14 - microtones

Post by vomitHatSteve »

We're coming up on a full year since the last recording challenge, so let's just do one.

Everyone is into microtones since angine de poitrine blew up. Why shouldn't we be too?

Record a song that intentionally features intervals outside of the western scale.

I'm not at all into microtones or guitars with way more frets than necessary.

See, I'm probably going to find a way to do this with my fretless. Why go more when you can go less?

I saw Davie504 use zip ties to add 1/4 tone frets to his bass...I might try that and see what happens. I've finished up a bunch of random chores and ongoing projects around the house, so I might actually have a bit of free time in the next week or two, I'll see if any inspiration strikes.

Thinking about it, with my off-pitch singing, I've been doing microtonal music for decades now!

For now. Thankfully the shelf life of these viral clusterfucks isn't very long.

I do respect it. honestly i do. I rememebrwatching the first video that made it's round and was super gobsmacked by the whole tihng. I can't do one speck of what they do at all. I 100% respect the work they put into their art.

I'm just over them. I don't have much in the way of entertainment feeds these days: Instagram, This Forum, and the swipe right feed on my Samsung phone, and these cow looking dudes are all over 2 of the 3. I'l be glad when their hawk Tuah days are behind them and they can just be artists again.

Put it this way more plainly, these guys are filed in my cabinet with Rancid. really good, but way over hyped and part of that might be due to just the asthetics.

I stand to be corrected,

My thing is they're just not fun to listen to. It's unsettling. It's like listening to math homework. There's no hook, nothing that resolves itself, it's just disjointed jarring weirdness over and over relentlessly. I can see why shut-ins that get off on technicality might love it but I rock and roll and I just aint got time for that.

Yeah, I really don't have time or inclination to be that technical. So I'm gonna try to write a hooky as heck rock song with some weird tones in it.

Microtones are awesome in Arabian music like the oud. Don’t very much care for it in much else.
“Naaaaaaaaaah man. I ain’t touching that mic. That thing’s expensive!”
