Attempt #2 not quite a sack of arseholes anymore, maybe just a bag of bollocks... progress.. however slight.

I hate neil young and I hate acoustic guitars and I hate songs with nothing but vocals and an acoustic guitar so I have nothing to add. It's a guitar and vocals. It's not even really "mixing". On the plus side, it's neil young, so the bar is not set very high.

Didn't think this would be your cup of tea somehow, mate! I just wanted a recording that I could practice singing on where the singing is obvious and I couldn't hide behind a wall of electric guitars and drums... I think this is the only folk song that I know how to play, know the words to and know the arrangement.

Its also short so only takes 2 minutes to get a take and I get a break during the instrumental bit in the middle.

I guess it's okay? I don't know. I can't focus on stuff like this. If you wanna practice singing, I don't think Neil Young is a good teaching tool. Lol.

You're right - maybe I should start with Bob Dylan and then maybe Nick Cave before I graduate to Neil Young then that bloke from Counting Crows... or just go back to singing punk and metal songs.

I've always found your absolute hatered of Neil Young quite surprising - I remember you saying once that he can fuck off and keep on soft rocking in his hypocrite world.

In my teens (through the 70s) this was the song used by guitar players to demonstrate their prowess.
I didn't play it because it doesn't come out right on a bass. I didn't learn a guitar chord until 77.
Nick Cave's a great singer, superb screamer and classic monologuer when needed.
From Release the Bats to The Wild Roses to The Ship Song.
You playing is fine and the sounds just a little too bright.
Vocals - it seems like you are restricting yourself to only a small range of notes. There were a couple of notes I thought you'd go for and you dropped to a safer option. No unattractive but with your self imposed limitations you need to be more expressive and "emote" a song rather more to compensate.

Cheers, Ray - I'll probably give it another couple of goes over time as its an easy to track and can be done quickly so its good for practice. As I get more comfortable with singing I'll probably start doing better performances. I didn't want to go for many of them high notes as even when I managed to hit them I couldn't get back down to the next note and hit that accurately too.

Its actually quite an easy song to play on the guitar, the left hand work is really comfortable under the fingers and you just have to match it up with the right hand rhythm, not thinking too much about the individual notes but concentrating on keeping the rhythm going.

I really like Nick Cave too - he's fucking great.

I'll try it one day - I'm a slow learner with other people's songs. There's only one song I can play through at present that's a cover - Leonard Cohen's Joan of Arc.

I have been luck enough to see Nick in the Boys, The Party & The Seeds formats - I haven't seen him as Grinderman though. I did see him in his 1st solo incarnation - Man or Myth!

I don't think I'll ever get to see him. My sister has seen him a few times - but she lived in London in the 80s and was right in the middle of the goth scene.
