Obnoxious Gases

Post by rayc »

The true value of having more than one guitar?
I pulled my ancient & favourite guitar from it's case for the 1st time since moving house six months ago.
Five minutes of banging away and a song idea came up.
early 70s single coil Bruno Royal Artist into Marshall on the Left...my ubiquitous Squire with the same settings on the right.
Each adds power chords over the top in the "choruses".
I threw a little noise up the centre in a couple of spots.
It's a bit long but I had sludgy Stooges hypnobeat in mind, (hence the quote from No Fun), and can/probably will fade out in the last chorus.
Bruno Royal Artist
Squire Bullet Mustang
Vantage bass
Marshall Superbass
57 & 609 mics on the cab
Behringer BDI21
SSL2 interface
Making noise is fun.
28/21/21 UPDATE
Lead guitar in...still waiting on vocals.
GBHwvox.mp3

UPDATE...15/12/21
Gibson LP added to the chorus (over on the right) and a 12 string to the change in the verses...again on the right, more bass NO reverb or fattening on the vocal bus...

12th Dec MIX Cut out a chunk of the lyrics and am trying to make the rhythm section pump.
As usual NOTHING on the stereo bus.

LYRIC

the harvest starts again
wide eyed in the rain
The same strange fruit
The same sick seed
the harvest march again
wild eyed in the rain

standing on the world's edge
standing on the window ledge
pushed passed the truth
burying their youth
ignore the real crime
one last time
That's what I see
That's what I know
Just to
begin with.

Losing sleep my baby?
You're wide awake in bed
And there are no 2nd prizes,
no 2nd prizes
Same strange fruit
Same sick seed
Same anonymous source
the Qpons that you need

standing on the knife's edge
standing on the window ledge
pushed past as truth
arm their youth
we pardoned the real crime
Profit takes every time
That's when I see
That's when I know
Just to
go on with.

solo

the harvest starts again
wide eyed in the rain
The same strange fruit
The same sick seed
the harvest march again
wild eyed in the rain

standing on the ocean's edge
standing on the tidal ledge
pushed alternate truth
burying our youth
we bought all the big lies
as earth dies
That's all I see
That's all I know
Just to
end with.

Losing sleep my baby?
You're wide awake in bed
And there are no 2nd prizes,
no 2nd prizes
Same strange fruit
Same sick seed
Same anonymous source
the Qpons that you need

You have a Marshall Superbass? Damn ray, you’re mentioning crazy stuff I didn’t know you had. Sounds good, though I’m listening on my iPad so I can’t say too much. The bass cuts through nicely on my iPad speakers, which is always a litmus test for me to determine how the bass sits in the mix. That feedback at the end was cool.

I never heard of a Bruno Royal Artist...had to look it up, wow cool! Kind of a mosrite , univox hi flyer vibe. I s yours hollow body? I want something like that .
Cool song!! Listening on headphones, nice stereo, very full cool groove, bass and drums sound great as do the guitars. Are you going to add vocals? Very solid foundation to do so, well done .

It all sounds nice ray, but I think you're playing too far off the beat in places - starts out pleasantly loose but then from 0:13 - 0:20 it goes wandering a fair bit, then you get back in at about 0:20 for about a bar, and then it goes off again until about 0:30 and then it settles back in..

It's my third Royal Artist...the 1st was stolen during a house breakin, the 2nd is an almost perfect replacement of the original and this third one, my back up/spare, records the best...here's a shot of it & a young SRV playing one...

Looking for lyrical inspiration at the moment...I'll get there by the time the backing is solid. Thanks

Yeah,
I decided to retrack the verse guitars as I changed the "riff" a little bit and couldn't get my timing right as the amp was LOUD in the room. I've tried again today and it's a bit tidier - I played along with just bass n drums this time.
Thanks for confirming my thoughts on the problem.

I've had the Superbass MkII since about 87. A couple of years ago, with Greg's guidance, I had it modded to Superlead specs - more or less. In SB mode it was just LOUD with no break up. 100w of all tube brutality and no nuance.
Now it's a better beast for guitar AND bass.

The original cost me AUS$70 in 1979 from a pawn shop and the replacement in the photograph cost AUS$350 plus postage from the US in about 2008.
I like the sound so much I even have a spare pair of pickups.
They fetch stupid prices on ebay so stay away from there.

From the last mix, The lead guitar sounds cool. I don't know if the mix is balanced right. The drums feel pretty quiet to me.

I might still bring the drums forward a little more.

This is a little more straightforward rock and less psychedelic/shoegaze than your stuff normally is, and really driving the drums would emphasize that.

They were fun to play with.
I only wanted them for the lines "Same strange fruit, same sick seed" but enjoyed the silliness. I've made it a little more sensible today.

Jumping straight in at 12/12 and I'd listened to another instrumental mix that you said you did for VHS - I initially thought that was the most recent.

Frist thing - I don't think the tambourine is really adding much and its timing drifts a little in places. Mainly though, its too loud and too dry! sink it into the mix a bit. Its a relief when it drops out for a bit at 3:00!
The vocal as usual is buried and full of effects!

Guitars sound good and its a good song though, Ray.

Thanks James,
Tambourine - yep, agreed...it's probably getting the flick - it was an experiment and people say they eitehr can't hear it, can't help hearing it or that once they've heard it they can't unhear it...I think that means hoik time.
Vocals - yep, buried...no effected though...light compression except on the vox bus and an high pass at about 100Hz. It's my voice and the double tracking...the only real VST added is a vocal fattener...which I could dump I suppose but that leaves thin, reedy me.
Ta for the kind words...I'll apply your thoughts to the mix tomorrow.
