Why can't I record guitar?

Post by liv_rong »

My phone or GoPro videos better represent my amp than when I mic my amp. Why do I suck?

Alright, here is the only decent example I have. The camera version seems more full while the recorded audio version seems thin to me. Raw track attached. Maybe its just in my head. ALSO, listening now I literally just realized I can hear a slight rattle coming through the speaker, is that a tube issue? I hear it when playing but assumed it was the breaker panel door right behind my amp. This is a revelation and possibly much easier to fix.

Something is distorting in an unpleasant way...I don't think it's the amp....maybe the video audio?
Other than that,...that's a pretty full sounding tone to me.

Did you hear the same in the attached file? I'm interested in this rattle now.

I hear it in both. I don't know what it could be, but you need to get to work figuring it out. Since it's in the room camera clip and the close mic clip, I'd guess it's something in the amp/cab. Maybe a tube rattle, maybe some physical part rattle.

To me it sounds like a spike in certain frequencies that are getting stacked by the delay repeats.

I don't know about you, but the reason I can't record guitar today is because the missus has the washing machine going hell-for-fucking-leather next door. :facepalm2:

As far as techniques go, I seem to have no trouble. Turn on the Marshall, stick an SM57 in front of it and press record.

the downloaded clip is much more dynamic and full ... think your attracted to the top end of the youtube clip .. which imo might lead you into thinking its more "polished" ... which is isnt, its squashed and flat dynamically (not saying it sounds bad,but in comparison)

could add a lil air to the daw clip with eq .. this things great http://www.audiopluginsforfree.com/luftikus/ and free :) (basically Maag)

if you want more clarity you could send your guitar to the amp dry, then in the daw use a sub bus/fx channel to add delay and verb (use it as a send effect, don't put it on the same channel) .. best thing about that is you can tweak the FX to your hearts content after its been recorded :)

btw id try adding air on the sub bus or reverb send :)

I tried a different cabinet and it has that same rattle/buzz. Now what? How can I test the tubes? Should I just replace them all? I have no spares.

Try tuning your guitar to standard instead of drop tuning and turn the effects off. It could just be that something is resonating at a specific frequency.

It's only one string dropped and it does it on high notes too. I just tested it clean.
